HBO Bags High Finance Drama ‘The Spread’ Starring Javier Bardem

With one series set in the world of finance, Industry, heading into its final season, HBO is adding another show centered around big money.

The streaming and cable outlet has given a straight-to-series order to The Spread, a drama set in Miami from creators Bill Dubuque (Ozark) and Sean Sansiveri and Fifth Season TV Studio. Javier Bardem will star in The Spread as a billionaire seeking “the power to shift the center of economic gravity to Miami — and decide how long the party lasts,” according to the show’s logline.

“Having long wanted to set a scripted series in Florida, HBO couldn’t be more excited to explore the gilded chaos of Miami and bring it to life with this kaleidoscope of extraordinary, visionary talent who is as fearless as the story itself,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vp HBO Programming and head of drama series and films.

Matthew Vaughn (the Kingsman films, X-Men: First Class) is set to direct and will serve as an executive producer along with Dubuque, Sansiveri, Bardem, Brad Weston of Makeready and Ian Stratford and Michael Bloom of Topic Studios.

The Spread is a gripping story of power and ambition, set against the vivid, glamorous backdrop of Miami,” said Noah Greenshner, executive vp and head of TV creative at Fifth Season. “We’ve brought together an exceptional creative team to capture the energy of this world and city, and we’re thrilled to be working alongside them and our partners at HBO, Makeready, and Topic to bring it to life.”

Bardem starred in Apple TV’s Cape Fear series earlier this year and earned an Emmy nomination in 2025 for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. The Oscar winner will next be seen in the feature films Dune: Part Three and Bunker, both due for release in December.
