Sugiono highlights Aceh, Maluku peacebuilding experience at UN

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono highlighted the country’s experience in building peace in Aceh and Maluku through sustained dialogue during the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) Ministerial-level Meeting in New York.

"Indonesia's experience in Aceh and Maluku demonstrates how sustained and inclusive dialogue between communities can restore trust and preserve national unity," Sugiono said as monitored in Jakarta on Friday.

Peacebuilding is a long-term investment in sustainable peace, beginning with prevention and continuing through recovery and reconciliation, Sugiono said.

Peacebuilding at every stage should strengthen national institutions and the fabric of society as a foundation for sustainable peace.

"Peacebuilding works best when it is nationally led and nationally owned," he added.

The PBC was created to support countries by bringing together expertise, political support and resources, Sugiono said, adding that it could help translate national peacebuilding priorities into sustained and coherent international support.

Sugiono called on the PBC to provide stronger strategic advice and promote greater coherence with the work of the U.N. General Assembly, Security Council and Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

He also urged the commission to draw on the experiences of countries, including those from the Global South, particularly in reconciliation, institutional building, recovery, and prevention.

Data and technology should be better harnessed to support more targeted and effective peacebuilding responses.

He also stressed the need for stronger partnerships with regional organisations, international financial institutions, and other partners to extend the reach and impact of peacebuilding efforts.

"Indonesia will continue to work with the Peacebuilding Commission and all partners to bring us closer in achieving our goal," Sugiono said.
