Deer rescue at Siam Amazing Park after 6 drown

Ten drowning hog deer were rescued from the flood at Siam Amazing Park in Bangkok's Kannayao district, but six others were found dead in the water.

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation said a rescue operation was launched after photos and messages circulated on social media showed about 20 hog deer standing in a flooded enclosure at the park for an extended period. (continues below)

Officials from the Wildlife Conservation Division arrived at the park at 2pm on Sunday to assess the animals' condition and plan the operation.

At 8.30pm, a 20-member team of veterinarians, wildlife health officers and staff  from several wildlife breeding and protection units began moving the deer. Volunteers from the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, volunteer veterinarians, the Zoological Park Organisation and the Littlepaws Foundation also assisted. (continues below)

The team managed to move 10 deer out of the flooded area. Six deer were also found dead. Offcials said the animals died before the rescue operation began.

The operation was completed at 11.30pm.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin instructed the department to continue working with Siam Amazing Park and relevant agencies to monitor the remaining deer and ensure their health and welfare.

The Indochinese hog deer is not large, standing only 60-70 centimetres high at the shoulder and weighs in at 30-50kg. It is a protected species.
