Indonesia secures US$50 million in durian trade deals with China

The Ministry of Trade reported rising demand in China for processed durian products and cardamom seeds, creating greater export opportunities for many Indonesian producers.
"By July this year, our frozen durian trade with China had reached Rp1 trillion. This year, I secured three major memorandums of understanding (MoUs) for durian, including US$50 million in trade agreements," Indonesian Trade Attaché in Beijing, Junita Syartika, said on the sidelines of Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) 2026 at ICE BSD City, South Tangerang, on Friday.
She added that fruits and seeds are among the main commodities driving ASEAN's exports to China, with a total export value of US$11 billion.
Meanwhile, cardamom is in high demand in China because it is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
"For this pharmaceutical category, our ingredients are highly sought after. One of the most urgently sought-after ingredients is cardamom as an ingredient in TCM," Syartika explained.
She stressed that Indonesian producers and entrepreneurs seeking to enter overseas markets with products in high demand must obtain complete and up-to-date information on product regulations, tariffs, trade agreements, and available government support.
“We should not end up paying the full tariff when we could pay nothing or only 5 percent simply because we lack the necessary information,” Syartika said.
She also highlighted the importance of taking advantage of existing trade agreements and market information to support product innovation and ensure smooth, sustainable trade.
“Awareness helps us develop better products, broaden our knowledge, and understand our products more deeply,” she said.
“Once we've mastered good packaging, good promotion, and are aware of existing regulations, no one can stop you,” she added.
