SASSA announces October 2026 SRD grant payment dates

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed the payment dates for the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant for October 2026.

The agency released the schedule in an official notice shared across its social media platforms, giving millions of grant recipients clarity on when to expect their money this month.

SRD payments roll out over two days

According to SASSA, SRD payments for October 2026 take place on Thursday, 22 October, and Friday, 23 October 2026.

Recipients whose applications SASSA approved for October can expect their funds to reflect within this window. However, the time it takes for money to appear may differ depending on the recipient’s bank or chosen payment method.

SASSA encourages applicants to check their application status on the official SRD website before heading to a pay point or retailer. This helps recipients avoid unnecessary trips and long queues if their payment has not yet been reflected.

SASSA SRD grant reaches millions of South Africans

In the same notice, SASSA shared several facts about the impact of the grant since its introduction during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The agency says the SRD grant reached close to 10 million beneficiaries at its peak. It currently supports approximately eight million recipients across South Africa.

SASSA describes the grant as one of the country’s largest social assistance programmes. The agency adds that it continues to provide a vital source of income for vulnerable individuals and households who have little or no other financial support.

For many unemployed South Africans, the monthly payment helps cover basic needs such as food, transport and airtime for job searching.

Grant extended until March 2027

SASSA also reminded South Africans that the government has extended the SRD grant until 31 March 2027.

The agency says the extension aims to ensure continued support for those in need while the grant remains in place.

Recipients should keep their personal and banking details up to date to avoid delays or interruptions to their payments. SASSA also urges applicants to rely only on its official channels for information and to remain alert to scams, especially messages asking for personal details or payment in exchange for faster approval.
