House collapses as dike damage worsens amid Zambales floods

SAN ANTONIO, Zambales — Another house was damaged as floodwaters surged anew in Barangay Sta. Fe in the Zambales town of San Marcelino on Friday, Aug. 28, after continuous rains caused a river to swell and further worsened conditions in the area.

The dike at Sta. Fe, which was already damaged during previous periods of heavy rain, sustained additional damage due to the latest downpour, allowing floodwaters to rush into nearby communities.

One of the houses collapsed after being hit by strong floodwaters. The family living in the house was able to evacuate to a safe area, according to the San Marcelino Public Information Office.

Based on last week’s damage assessment, 10 houses were totally damaged, with estimated losses reaching P8.5 million in Sta. Fe. The list includes the two houses that were buried in sand and other houses struck by fallen trees.

Floodwaters also again entered the barangay hall, multipurpose hall and other government buildings in the area.

Water levels were also reported to have nearly reached the temporary footbridge being constructed in the village.

Around 800 residents on the northern side of the river have remained isolated since Aug. 9 after floodwaters damaged a portion of the dike and swept away a bridge.

Meanwhile, the municipal government postponed its scheduled relief operations there because of the dangerous condition of the river, which could no longer be crossed by vehicles because of the strong currents. /das
