Chaos in the Ring: Carter Efe, Speed Darlington trade threats as Phyna gets set for Nkechi Blessing face off

What was billed as a press conference ahead of Chaos in the Ring’s Independence Day showdown lived up to its name on Tuesday as tensions boiled over at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Sheraton, Ikeja, Lagos.

The build-up to the 1 October fight card quickly turned into another spectacle, with skit maker Carter Efe and rapper Speed Darlington exchanging threats, while the rivalry between actress Nkechi Blessing and reality TV star Phyna produced its own share of heated moments.

The drama reached another level when a birthday cake presented to Carter Efe became the centre of a bizarre confrontation, with Speed Darlington kicking the cake to the ground.

The situation later became even more chaotic when firecrackers set off by members of Efe’s entourage sparked a brief fire at the venue.

The fire was quickly brought under control with extinguishers, but not before adding another dramatic chapter to an already explosive press conference.

With the fighters and celebrities clearly determined to sell their respective rivalries ahead of Wednesday’s event, the Balmoral Convention Centre provided a preview of the tension expected when the competitors finally step into the ring.

Carter Efe, Speed Darlington turn up the heat

Carter Efe wasted little time in taking aim at Speed Darlington, questioning why his opponent had agreed to fight him after losing to Habeeb “Portable” Badmus in their previous encounter.

Efe, who defeated Portable by unanimous decision at the same venue in May, suggested that Speed Darlington had taken on a challenge beyond his reach.

“Speed Darlington, are you insane? You want to fight me when you could not beat Portable. You should not be in the ring with me at all, and that is why I will beat you,” Efe said.

The skit maker also defended his approach to entertainment and his previous decision to call out music superstar Wizkid, insisting that his actions should be viewed within the context of entertainment rather than personal disrespect.

“Some people think me calling out Wizkid is disrespectful too, but it is not. It is entertainment. It is not disrespectful. I do not know why people think that. It is a sport, and we will entertain fans and make money,” he added.

Speed Darlington, however, was not prepared to allow Efe to dominate the exchange.

He responded by turning his attention to the belt Efe won following his victory over Portable and warned his opponent that the championship would soon belong to him.

“Be careful with that belt. Your belt is mine. Do not scratch it now,” Speed Darlington said.

The verbal battle provided an early indication of the intensity expected when the pair meet in the ring on 1 October.

Birthday celebration turns into another flashpoint

The confrontation took an unexpected turn when a birthday cake was presented to Carter Efe during the event.

What should have been a celebratory moment quickly became another opportunity for rivalry as Speed Darlington kicked the cake to the ground.

The incident drew attention from those in attendance and further fuelled the already hostile atmosphere between the two fighters.

The development was followed by another dramatic episode when firecrackers set off by Efe’s entourage triggered a small fire.

Venue personnel and those around the scene quickly responded with fire extinguishers, bringing the situation under control.

The incident did little to calm proceedings, instead reinforcing the unusual nature of a press conference that had already featured threats, confrontations and heated exchanges.

Nkechi Blessing issues strong warning to Phyna

The tension was not limited to the men’s contest.

The rivalry between Nkechi Blessing and Phyna also produced one of the most intense exchanges of the afternoon, with the actress making it clear that she intends to settle their differences inside the ring.

Nkechi warned Phyna that she was fully prepared for the bout and claimed the level of disrespect between them had gone too far.

“I will beat you. You won’t do it again. This disrespect is too much. I am three million per cent prepared for the fight. My body is ready,” she said.

The actress also expressed a desire to have the fight start immediately, insisting that she was eager to settle the rivalry.

“I would have liked to start the fight here now. No one in her family can stop her from getting the beating. 1st October, come watch and see,” Nkechi Blessing added.

She then switched to Pidgin English as the exchange became even more heated.

“I go break your head. We will see in the ring. I go make you faint. Any small thing, respect, respect. I go disrespect you for ring. If you stand up after second round, change my name,” she declared.

With both women refusing to back down, their encounter has quickly emerged as one of the most anticipated celebrity bouts on the card.

‘It has become really personal’ — Adamu

Founder of Chaos in the Ring and Balmoral Group Promotions, Ezekiel Adamu, acknowledged the intensity surrounding the match-ups, particularly the growing rivalry between Phyna and Nkechi Blessing.

According to Adamu, what started as competitive entertainment has now developed into something considerably more personal.

“I think it has become personal. It was personal before. I think it has become really personal now. We saw Carter and Speedy as well. It is going to be very crazy chaos. We saw Freezy and Godday as well. I mean, there is a lot of war over the night. Another edition of chaos at the press conference. Can’t wait,” he said.

Adamu admitted that the level of drama witnessed at the press conference was beyond what organisers had expected.

“I think it is going to be a war. I think Nkechi is really pissed. She cannot wait to get her hands on Phyna now, and I think Speedy as well, too, based on the stunt that Carter just pulled. I think it is going to be a proper war,” he added.

Godday Appah set for Championship defence

Away from the celebrity rivalries, the card also carries a major championship contest.

Godday Appah will defend his WBO African Light Heavyweight Continental Championship against Ghanaian boxer Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah.

The championship bout will headline an event packed with celebrity clashes and boxing contests, with Carter Efe’s meeting with Speed Darlington and Phyna’s showdown with Nkechi Blessing featuring prominently on the undercard.

The combination of championship boxing and celebrity match-ups has generated significant attention ahead of the Independence Day event.

Efe returns after Portable victory

Carter Efe enters the contest with the confidence of a fighter who already has a victory at the venue.

The skit maker defeated Portable by unanimous decision in May in a bout that attracted considerable attention and helped establish Chaos in the Ring as a platform where entertainment personalities could draw large audiences into boxing.

Following that victory, businessman Emeka “E-Money” Okonkwo reportedly promised Efe a ₦50 million reward.

Now, Efe faces another high-profile opponent in Speed Darlington, with the pair’s increasingly hostile exchanges adding another layer to an already heavily promoted encounter.

If Tuesday’s press conference was anything to go by, the action on 1 October could be just as unpredictable outside the ring as it promises to be inside it.
