After 3 Years Away, Netflix's Answer To Lost Is Officially Returning With A New Show

Lost’s mystery brought people to the show, but their investment in the passengers of Flight 815kept them there. Every network and streamer has tried their hand at the next big mystery box show, and in 2021, Netflix acquired one that was already incredibly popular.
Manifest started as an NBC drama in 2018, greenlit after the 2014 disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 sparked interest in a missing flight mystery. In Manifest, the passengers on Flight 828 experience turbulence, only to discover five years have passed while they experienced only a few hours.
If Lost was fundamentally a mystery about a place, Manifest is a mystery about the passengers. NBC canceled the show despite the season 3 finale leaving several major mysteries unresolved. Luckily, Manifest was saved by Netflix for a fourth and final season, allowing the series to finally answer the cliffhanger questions and give fans a satisfying resolution.
Manifest’s ending is definitely better than Lost’s, but the creative team behind it is embarking on a new adventure. Three years after Manifest’s season 4 finale, Netflix announced on August 28, a significant date for the fandom, that the world of Manifest would expand with a spinoff, Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery.
Why A Manifest Spinoff With New Characters Is The Right Choice For Netflix
Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery will be a new series set in the Manifest universe, but it wisely isn't continuing the stories of Ben, Michaela, Cal, and the rest of Flight 828. Instead, the spinoff follows a mysterious plane that crash-lands in Denver.
The passengers survive a crash in Arrivals, but they don't know who they are, where they came from, or why they're there. Rather than trying to recreate the original series, Arrivals is taking the core Manifest formula and building an entirely new mystery around a new group of passengers.
A spinoff will give longtime Manifest fans a reason to return without making the series inaccessible to newcomers. Familiar creative voices and the shared universe provide a link to the original, while the new characters and mystery allow Arrivals to stand entirely on its own. That's a smart direction following Manifest's series finale. The fourth season brought the story full circle, so continuing directly from that ending could have undermined the sense of closure that made the finale work.
A new group of characters avoids that problem while giving Netflix another opportunity to explore the mythology that made Manifest such a compelling mystery-box series. Like Lost, Manifest ultimately proved that its mysteries work best when audiences have people to care about at the center of them. Arrivals keeps that fundamental idea intact while giving the franchise a completely new mystery to solve.
Manifest creator Jeff Rake is returning alongside former co-executive producers Margaret Easley and Laura Putney, who are stepping up as co-creators and co-showrunners. That gives the new series a direct creative connection to the original, while still allowing the team to tell a completely different story.
Manifest Is Doing The One Thing Lost Avoided
Lost never had a spinoff, reboot, continuation, sequel, or movie. When the series ended in 2010, television was operating in a very different franchise landscape, before studios and streamers became so focused on turning successful properties into interconnected universes.
Manifest, meanwhile, arrived at almost the perfect time for a show to prove it could live beyond its original run. After NBC canceled the series, its performance on Netflix helped convince the streamer to save Manifest, and the fourth and final season ultimately gave the story a definitive ending.
That success makes Manifest an especially useful piece of intellectual property for Netflix to revisit. The streamer is constantly looking for franchises, as it is the biggest streamer with a comparatively light catalog. Arrivals gives Netflix a chance to expand an established mystery box universe without undoing the conclusion of the original series.
