The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake has finally arrived on Nintendo Switch 2, and it's already established itself as one of the best-reviewed games of the decade. Not surprising, perhaps, when you consider the original Ocarina of Time still holds the title of best-reviewed game of all-time (at least according to Metacritic)
In our own 9/10 review, we admitted the game is gorgeous and remains a masterpiece, but that we wanted it to take a few more risks.
"The Switch 2 remake preserves its legacy, though it resists change in ways that occasionally clash. Remakes are always a sticky subject: many fans want the game to be completely different, while others want it to be basically the same, but on a modern platform with easy access. There's no real solution to making a remake that satisfies everyone, but Ocarina of Time comes close. With some additional content and replay value, it could easily have been the definitive version. But it will "just" have to settle for being an incredible remake that's worth playing at least once. Ocarina of Time is arguably worth playing in any iteration, including Switch 2."
That's the consensus among critics so far, but even with this caveat, Nintendo clearly has a huge hit on its hands. Perhaps that's why Nintendo is celebrating the release of Ocarina of Time with a bunch of special freebies available to download right now.
As spotted by NSO Icon Alerts, special The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Switch Icons are available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, and will rotate weekly until December 2. These avatars include both versions of Link, Sheik, Princess Zelda, and a Deku Baba. I'm not sure who out there wants a Deku Baba icon, but I'm sure they exist, and more power to 'em.
Each of these icons is available for 10 Platinum Points each, a free currency you can earn by completing specific missions on your console, mobile device, or web browser. If you're not already set up to be earning Platinum Points, you really should be. A variety of exclusive backgrounds and frames are also available alongside the avatars.
It's an exciting time for The Legend of Zelda series, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The star of 2026 is, of course, the new Ocarina of Time remake, but 2027 will bring us the live-action movie. I'd also be very surprised if we didn't get another remaster, re-release, or port next year, given Nintendo has been aiming to get one Zelda game release (including spinoffs) out a year for the last few years now.
Personally, I'd be happy with a simple Nintendo Switch 2 port of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, but I've also learned not to expect such things.
