Ed Sheeran's Suffolk home has become known for some unusual additions, but one part of the property has a much greener purpose. A field that was once used for ploughing was turned into a wildlife pond and meadow, with trees planted around it over the following years.

By 2021, Sheeran said around 14,000 trees had been planted on the estate and that more wildlife had started appearing there.The project began with a planning application for a wildlife pond. Documents submitted to the local authority described the pond as a way of supporting nature and creating a habitat for insects, amphibians and birds. Planning permission was granted in 2016, with restrictions placed on recreational use.

What was planned for the Suffolk pond?

The original planning documents gave the pond a clear environmental purpose. Sheeran's application said it would support nature conservation by providing a habitat for wildlife. The plans also referred to insects and amphibians that could make use of the water, while birds could visit the area.The approval came with a condition that the pond was not supposed to be used for swimming or other recreational activities.

This later became the centre of a dispute between Sheeran and some of his neighbours. At the time, however, the application focused on conservation rather than recreation.

The scale of the planting became clearer in 2021. Sky News reported that he said approximately 14,000 trees had been planted around the estate and that he had allowed the meadow to grow.Sheeran also explained that the land had previously been a ploughed field.

In his words, the change had brought "way more wildlife" to the area. He also spoke about his interest in planting trees and helping wildlife in his home county. His comments were part of a wider conversation about his environmental efforts. The Independent reported in December 2021. Sheeran said he wanted to buy land and plant trees, describing his aim as trying to "rewild as much of the UK" as he could.

He also acknowledged that touring and travelling for his music career have an environmental cost.

From a bare field to a greener landscape

The changes around the property were not limited to the pond itself. Trees were planted around the estate, while parts of the meadow were allowed to grow rather than being kept closely trimmed.That matters because a less intensively managed meadow can provide space for insects and other wildlife, while trees offer shelter and food. Sheeran's own description suggests that he noticed a difference in the number of animals appearing around the property after these changes.The project therefore became more than the creation of a single pond. Over several years, the surrounding landscape was also changed.

Why did the pond become controversial?

The environmental project later became tangled up in a planning dispute. In 2017, steps and a jetty were added to the pond, leading to questions over whether it was being used as a swimming pool. The local council inspected the site in 2019 and said there was no evidence at that stage that the pond was not being used as a wildlife pond or that the planning conditions had been broken.The issue resurfaced in 2024 after Sheeran posted a video of himself jumping into the pond. By then, restrictions on swimming had been successfully challenged and removed following an appeal.Sheeran has continued to describe the feature as a pond rather than a conventional swimming pool. In his 2021 comments, he pointed to the wildlife around it and the thousands of trees planted nearby.

Sheeran's wider interest in rewilding

The Suffolk project fits into a broader interest Sheeran has expressed in restoring natural areas.

Speaking to BBC Radio London, he said he wanted to plant as many trees as possible and rewild more of the UK. He also said he loved his county, wildlife and the environment.His approach has attracted attention partly because of the contrast between his career and the environmental concerns connected with global touring. Sheeran himself has acknowledged that his profession involves considerable travel but said he was trying to make a positive contribution through planting and rewilding.What began with permission for a wildlife pond in 2016 eventually became a much bigger change to the landscape around Sheeran's Suffolk home.
