DA confident MK Party will not secure majority in eThekwini

Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate for eThekwini, Haniff Hoosen, says he is confident that the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party will not secure a 50% majority in the metro.
Hoosen made the remarks at the KwaZulu-Natal Results Operations Centre (ROC) at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) as election results began trickling in. So far, the MK Party has taken an early lead in many KwaZulu-Natal municipalities.
Speaking to journalists at the KZN ROC, Hoosen said he was confident that the MK Party would not secure a majority in the hotly contested municipality.
He attributed this to voter turnout and support for the DA’s efforts to prevent the MK Party from taking control of eThekwini.
“I think we’re going to get closer to that picture and I’m really grateful for the support and the turnout in eThekwini,” he said.
“We mustn’t forget that the polls placed the MK Party at 55% majority and the party itself said it would get a two-thirds majority and we succeeded in ensuring that this does not happen.
“I think that’s a great relief for many people in eThekwini. I am absolutely confident that the DA is going to grow and we already got results from a number of wards that we’ve never won before, several of them were ANC wards previously which we were able to now win.
“And I think what is evident in this election thus far is that thousands of people voted for the DA for the very first time and that gives us comfort that we are definitely growing,” he said.
