Malaysia backs Saudi sovereignty, calls for end to Houthi hostilities

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — Malaysia has condemned in the strongest terms the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including those targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, and expressed solidarity with the Kingdom.

Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry said Malaysia supported Saudi Arabia’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the security and safety of its population, in accordance with the United Nations Charter and international law.

“Malaysia also supports all efforts towards de-escalation and an immediate end to the hostilities,” it said in a statement on Monday.

The statement comes amid an escalation in hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, with Saudi authorities saying a ballistic missile fired towards Riyadh on Sept 19 was intercepted and destroyed.

Saudi Gazette reported that the Houthis also attempted to target civilians and civilian infrastructure in Baish, Taif, Farasan and Yanbu, but the attacks were thwarted.

Saudi Press Agency reported that on Sept 14, Houthi missile and drone attacks on Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif injured 13 civilians and damaged several houses and vehicles, according to the Saudi-led coalition.

The Foreign Ministry said Malaysia reaffirmed the importance of its longstanding partnership with Saudi Arabia and its commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties.

“Malaysia attaches great importance to its longstanding partnership with Saudi Arabia, and remains fully committed to further strengthening this partnership for mutual interests of both nations,” the ministry said. — Bernama
