PlayStation Officially Unveils New Hardware Arriving In 2027

Sony has found itself in hot water on multiple occasions this year. Not only has it announced that PlayStation consoles will be digital only going ahead, putting the end to an era of physical discs, but it also aims to keep its exclusive titles strictly exclusive, no longer introducing a PC port later down the line. On top of that, it recently announced that it would no longer be working with Hideo Kojima to make his upcoming IP, Physint, a PlayStation exclusive, leading the iconic video game creator to team up with Xbox instead.

Overall, it is not the best time to be a PlayStation user, and with no confirmation on the launch of the next console generation, the only thing that is clear is that Sony has a lot of making-up to do in upcoming years.

PlayStation 5 Pro

In the meantime, however, it seems as though Sony is still prioritizing the launch of hardware. This year has already welcomed multiple DualSense releases, but now the company has turned its attention to audio with the arrival of a brand-new headset aimed at producing better sound, and most importantly, comfort.

In a recent announcement, PlayStation has revealed that it will be updating its PlayStation 5 Pulse headsets. Set to launch in late 2026 and early 2027 respectively, the brand-new iterations will provide improved sound, comfort, and even noise-reduction features capable of filtering out any unwanted background noise.

When it comes to the PlayStation 5, there will be two models to choose from: the Pulse Wireless Headset and the Pulse Edge Wireless Headset, although a specific release date, price tag, or pre-order plans have not yet been revealed.

We all know how annoying it is to be flanked by an enemy due to not being able to hear their footsteps, but these two new headsets aim to pinpoint sound a lot more accurately by providing "superior sound quality" and "custom studio-inspired planar magnetic drivers". As such, according to an official PlayStation blog post, "Larger planar drivers have been added to PlayStation Pulse and Pulse Edge headsets, creating fuller, deeper bass, while keeping the clean sounds players have enjoyed from Pulse Elite."

Additionally, there have been improvements to voice chat, putting an emphasis on delivering a smooth and detailed experience for those who like to play with friends. As such, the new models include "AI-enhanced noise rejection in their integrated mics to filter out background noises. Both headsets also feature an updated form factor designed for lasting comfort and durability, with rotating earcups that allow the headsets to lay flat for easier portability."

Out of the two, there is no denying that the Pulse Edge Wireless Headset sounds the most appealing. Not only does it include "planar magnetic drivers" aimed at better bass and more detailed, quieter sounds, but it has "active noise cancellation" and even a detachable boom mic. However, this probably means that it will be the more expensive of the two. Luckily, both come with a carrying case.

The Pulse Wireless Headset launches later this year, whilst customers will have to wait a bit longer for the Pulse Edge Wireless Headset, which launches some time in early 2027. However, PlayStation has promised to keep us updated with all of the necessary information in the upcoming months.
