WWE's upcoming Disney World debut reportedly went in a different direction once the John Cena Classic became a real project. According to WrestleVotes, the company had talked about several ideas for a possible Disney venture over the past few years, and an event at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex was already being considered in September. The John Cena Classic ended up as the preferred option, giving WWE a way to bring its main roster and NXT talent together at the Florida venue. WWE has now confirmed the December 14 event, with a second crossover show scheduled for the following night.
WWE Had Discussed Several Ideas For Its Disney World Venture Before Settling On The John Cena Classic
WrestleVotes gave some insight into how WWE got to the idea in its latest report. The outlet recalled that it had earlier reported WWE's interest in hosting an event at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in early September. But the company had apparently been discussing different possibilities long before that report came out.
“Back in early September, we reported exclusively on Fightful Select that WWE had interest in hosting an event on Disney property at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. We're told a number of ideas had been discussed over the past few years as part of WWE's potential Disney venture.”
The report then said the John Cena Classic became the concept those involved wanted to take forward.
“However, once the John Cena Classic became a reality, that was the direction those involved wanted to see through.”
WWE confirmed the plans on November 2, when John Cena showed up on Monday Night Raw and announced the tournament's details. The show happens on December 14 at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida, and it streams live on Netflix as a special edition of Raw.
WWE's Disney Partnership Will Also Include An Avengers-Themed Worlds Collide Show And A Two-Day Fan Experience
The John Cena Classic brings together established names from Raw and SmackDown with rising NXT talent. Cody Rhodes got announced as its first invitee, and the event also has the John Cena Classic Championship attached.
Club WWE members get voting privileges too, and WWE's official announcement says they will vote in real time for their favourite Superstar performance and decide the night's top honour.
WWE and Disney have also confirmed a second show for December 15.
The Avengers: Doomsday-themed edition of Worlds Collide will feature wrestlers from WWE, NXT and AAA, and it lands just three days before the Marvel movie's US theatrical release on December 18.
The two-day setup will include WWE World, organised alongside Fanatics. Fans can expect exclusive merchandise, photographs and autograph opportunities with WWE Superstars.
WWE and Disney first launched their partnership in 2025, when ESPN became the exclusive US home of WWE Premium Live Events for ESPN Unlimited subscribers.
WWE and Fanatics will also sell Avengers: Doomsday co-branded merchandise, including championship belts, through WWE World, WWEShop.com and selected Disney retail stores.
Combo tickets are scheduled to go on sale November 13, with presales beginning November 12.
