Tollywood star and filmmaker Nani has shared his views on the growing global reach of Telugu cinema and the industry’s success with pan-India films. The actor believes that the support of Telugu audiences gives filmmakers the confidence to dream big and take risks.

He also spoke about the different strengths of Indian film industries and explained why Telugu cinema has found a wider audience. In a conversation with Variety India, speaking about the global expansion of Telugu cinema, Nani credited the audience for encouraging filmmakers to think on a bigger scale.

Nani on Telugu cinema’s global growth

“It is our audience’s love for cinema, which is letting us think big and dream big. Because we are confident that they will support us.

When we do an exciting project, we’re confident that the footfalls will be strong,” he said.He also lauded Telugu filmmakers for being willing to take risks and create ambitious films. “I think Telugu cinema going global is largely because of how we look at cinema. The entertainment we offer is not too serious or heartbreaking or sad. We want something dramatic and massy happening like ‘Baahubali.’ We love that kind of stuff,” he added.

Nani addresses misconceptions about Telugu cinema

Nani also said some people still believe Telugu films mainly feature songs, dance and action sequences. He acknowledged that the industry has often been seen as too commercial but said this perception is slowly changing.“I think that a lot of people assume that Telugu cinema is all about songs, dance and a lot of fights. They assume that our films are too commercial but there are so many wonderful movies also coming out of the Telugu industry and nobody talks about.

But I feel that is changing,” he said. The actor added that he expects this misconception to disappear as more Telugu films reach audiences beyond their home market.

Nani on his journey as an outsider

Nani made a big name for himself in the industry despite not coming from a film family. Speaking about it, he said that entering the industry for money or fame alone could make the journey difficult, as success requires genuine passion.“I feel that compared to any other industry; the odds to be successful here, are lesser.

So, if an outsider is just looking for money or fame, they should seek it elsewhere. Unless you’re really passionate, the journey or the process won’t be easy,” he said.Nani explained that he does not see his career as a race to achieve success with every release. Instead, he focuses on making films he believes in. “I am just trying to do what I love, and things have fallen in place, and I am thankful for that,” he said.

Nani’s latest and upcoming work

On the work front, Nani was last seen in the action drama ‘The Paradise’ helmed by Srikanth Odela. The film, despite much hype, turned out to be a huge disappointment at the box office. Now, he is working on his next action thriller ‘Bloody Romeo’ directed by Sujeeth. The film is expected to star Nani as a chef who secretly lives a double life as a top-ranked gangster.
