Costume Designer Sandy Powell to Present Film London Jarman Award – Film News in Brief

Translate

Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell is set to present this year’s Film London Jarman Award on Nov. 24, where she will also be the guest of honor.

Powell frequently collaborated and was mentored by Derek Jarman, whom the award was established in honor of in 2008 to celebrate U.K.-based artist-filmmakers in the film industry. Throughout her career, Powell has also worked with Martin Scorsese, Neil Jordan, Todd Haynes and Yorgos Lanthimos.

“Sandy’s remarkable career speaks to a truly remarkable talent. From her days collaborating with Derek Jarman on films like ‘Caravaggio’ and ‘Edward II’ to the peerless design she has brought to a staggering array of modern classics, her work is bold, beautiful and boundlessly creative,” said Adrian Wootton, OBE, the chief executive of Film London. “She has long been vocal in her support of Derek’s cultural legacy, and, as such, I don’t think we could ask for a more fitting guest of honor for this year’s Film London Jarman Award.”

Also working on “Cinderella,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Mary Poppins Returns,” Powell received the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for “Shakespeare in Love,” “The Aviator” and “The Young Victoria.” This year’s Film London Jarman Award nominees are Sadia Pineda Hameed, Ilona Sagar, Rhea Storr and Alia Syed.

Molly Shannon Joins “Summer 2000: The X-Cetra Story” as Executive Producer

Molly Shannon has joined “Summer 2000: The X-Cetra Story” as an executive producer before the film’s Los Angeles premiere at the AFI Fest on Oct. 24.

After the screening, the Emmy-nominated actress and bestselling author will moderate a Q&A with director, writer and producer Ayden Mayeri, writer, producer and cinematographer Barry Rothbart, producer Rachael Fung and subjects Janet Kariuki, Mary Washburn, Jessica Hall and Robin O’Brien.

“Summer 2000: The X-Cetra Story” follows a group of friends as they reunite when the album they made as pre-teens becomes a cult online hit 20 years later.

“I was so deeply moved by this beautiful film and its reminder of how easy it is to lose track of that free-spirited, dreaming little girl inside all of us,” Shannon said. “It’s a wonderful reminder to keep making room for the things that bring us joy, no matter how much time has passed. I’m so excited to be part of this project and to help share X-Cetra’s story with audiences.”

The film made its world premiere at SXSW and won the Documentary Feature Jury Award. Since then, it has screened at the Sydney Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival and the Bentonville Film Festival. After AFI Fest, it will screen at DOC NYC.
