VP Gibran urges stronger protection for migrant workers in Malaysia

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming called for stronger protection of Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia, as the two neighboring countries work to renew a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on labor placement.

Vice President Gibran had a bilateral meeting with Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the Vice Presidential Palace here on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters following the bilateral meeting, Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers Mukhtarudin said the Indonesian delegation raised the MoU renewal, which covers the placement and protection of workers in both the formal and informal sectors.

"The vice president emphasized the critical need to provide excellent and robust protection for our migrant workers in Malaysia," Mukhtarudin said.

The minister expressed hope that discussions on the MoU renewal will conclude in the coming months. Following technical meetings earlier this month, high-level talks are scheduled for October.

During the meeting, Mukhtarudin formally requested the Malaysian deputy prime minister's support to expedite the agreement's finalization.

In addition to worker protection, the discussions addressed efforts to expand the placement quota for Indonesian workers in Malaysia's formal sector, specifically targeting medium- and high-skilled employment opportunities.

"The Malaysian deputy prime minister welcomed our initiative to renew the MoU and stated that he would coordinate with his officials to accelerate the process," Mukhtarudin added.

Highlighting the current state of migrant worker protection, the minister noted that Indonesia and Malaysia already have an existing agreement in place. Both nations regularly conduct capacity-building and guidance programs aimed at minimizing potential issues faced by Indonesian workers in Malaysia.
