The international friendly between India and Brazil will allow an expanded roster of substitutes, with each team permitted to make up to 11 changes during the game.

The Blue Tigers will play the five-time world champion for the first time in men’s international football at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Saturday. The match, however, could see the teams field entirely different XIs across the two halves following a change in the number of substitutes allowed.

“The decision was discussed in the matchday-minus-one meeting and was subsequently agreed upon, expanding from the eight substitutes that were earlier proposed,” a source close to the developments told Sportstar.

According to the International Football Association Board (IFAB), Law 3 states: “In ‘A’ team matches, a maximum of substitutes may be named, of which a maximum of six may be used. In all other matches, a greater number of substitutes may be used, provided that if the referee is not informed, or if no agreement is reached before the match, each team is allowed a maximum of six substitutes.”

It is learnt that all stakeholders, including referees, match officials and the two team camps, have been informed after the two federations agreed on the change, allowing India and Brazil to plan their match accordingly.

India comes into the match after an impressive 1-1 draw with Panama, ranked 94 places above it, while Brazil drew and won during its tour of Australia, beating the Socceroos 4-2 in its previous match.
