6 Upcoming Sci-Fi Shows, Ranked by Hype

Translate

Chris is a UK-based film and TV writer, editor and occasional filmmaker. For more than a decade, he has written news, reviews and features covering movies, television and pop culture. He has also made short films and worked in video production, giving him experience on both sides of the screen. Chris runs the We Love Movies More Than You TikTok channel and has a particular interest in overlooked and short-lived TV shows.

Sci-fi has always been one of the most versatile genres, spanning everything from post-apocalyptic futures to strange new worlds and multiverses full of unlimited possibilities. The streaming era may have given audiences too much choice, but it has also brought new stories and turned more beloved sci-fi books into must-see shows.

The future looks even brighter with the return to the Alien universe, the first live-action Blade Runner TV series, and a highly anticipated adaptation of a landmark cyberpunk book on the horizon. Most of these upcoming sci-fi shows won’t be released until next year, but all of them are worth adding to your watchlist.

6 'Ahsoka'

Season 2 January 20, 2027

The Star Wars universe continues to thrive on Disney+ with the highly anticipated second season of Ahsoka. Rosario Dawson returns as the former Jedi more than three years after being stranded on Peridea with her former Padawan, Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo). Now that Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) has escaped to rally the Empire’s remaining forces, the galaxy finds itself in need of a hero.

Season 1 delivered on the promise of continuing the story from the animated shows Rebels and The Clone Wars. For all its impressive action and lightsaber battles, Ahsoka still found time for a much-needed reunion with Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), who will be back in a bigger role for the upcoming season. The finale also teased the return of one of the strangest parts of Star Wars mythology with the briefly glimpsed statues of the Mortis Gods (The Ones). Introduced in The Clone Wars, the mystic trio personifies the light, dark, and balance of the Force, and their live-action debut is an incredibly exciting prospect. Series creator Dave Filoni has revealed they are “definitely a thing” in the new episodes, but it remains unclear how much of a part they will play. We’ll find out when Ahsoka returns to Disney+ on January 20, 2027.

5 '3 Body Problem'

Season 2 Winter 2026

For their first TV project after Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, alongside Alexander Woo, took on the mammoth task of bringing Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy to life. An investigation into the apparent suicides of respected members of the science community unlocks an interstellar conflict with an advanced alien race, the San-Ti. This sprawling Netflix sci-fi epic follows a group of scientists who must embark on a mission to defend Earth from an invasion that will take 400 years to arrive. 3 Body Problem's first season turned mind-bending ideas into essential viewing, but fans have been waiting more than two years for its return.

The second season will likely take its cues from book two, The Dark Forest. The finale teased this with the Wallfacer Project, which gives a select few people the resources to develop defense strategies in the one place the San-Ti can’t spy on: the human mind. Now that the world is no longer in the dark about the invasion, the stakes are even higher. Jess Hong, Jovan Adepo, Benedict Wong and Liam Cunningham are among the returning cast, with Alfie Allen, Claudia Doumit, and Ellie de Lange joining as new characters. There’s no fixed release date, but Netflix has said that all six episodes will be released in 2026. Production on the third and final season is underway, so hopefully there won’t be years to wait before 3 Body Problem reaches its endgame.

4 'Blade Runner 2099'

Limited Series November 25

Set 50 years after Denis Villeneuve’s lavish sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic, Blade Runner 2099 charts a bold new chapter in the franchise with its first ever live-action series. The future, long after a replicant uprising shifted the balance of power, has become a dangerous place for humans. Michelle Yeoh stars as Olwen, a replicant Blade Runner nearing the end of her life. She’s forced to partner with human fugitive Cora (Hunter Schafer), to find a runaway who has a secret that "could collapse their fragile city."

Created by Silka Luisa (Shining Girls), Blade Runner 2099 continues to explore the themes of Philip K. Dick’s original sci-fi masterpiece, especially the question of what it means to be human. In this “sunshine noir” Los Angeles, replicants have control, and the corporate-fueled future has only added to the moral and urban decay. The trailer teases plenty of mystery and action-packed set pieces, plus the existential dread that has always sat at the heart of Blade Runner. Yeoh and Schafer will be joined by Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Amy Lennox, Tom Burke, and Sheila Atim. As a limited series set far enough away from the two movies to tell a completely new story, Blade Runner 2099 should appeal to longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise. All eight episodes will be available on Prime Video on November 25.

3 'Alien Earth'

Season 2 TBC 2027

Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth packed a lot into its first season and still made time for hard rock needle drops. The first TV show in the franchise—set two years before Ridley Scott’s sci-fi masterpiece—wasn’t afraid to take some wild creative risks. The series introduced a world run by megacorporations, where a trillionaire’s groundbreaking experiment to transfer human consciousness into a synthetic body creates Wendy (Sydney Chandler)—the world’s first hybrid. Everything changes when a spaceship carrying a range of horrifying alien specimens crashes on Earth, and corporate warfare breaks out to contain and control them.

From its array of new creatures to powerful companies attempting to weaponize the Xenomorphs, Alien: Earth managed to be its own thing while staying connected to what came before. The second season is now in production, with Tracey Ullman, Sam Spruell, Jerome Flynn, and Peter Dinklage joining the returning cast. Sadly, that means there’s still a bit of a wait to see what happens to Wendy and her Lost Boys at Neverland or what’s next for T. Ocellus (aka The Eye) now that it has a new host. Hawley’s creation is an odyssey into an uncharted, decidedly weirder corner of the Alien universe and was easily one of the best sci-fi shows of 2025.

2 'Silo'

Season 4 July 9, 2027

Based on Hugh Howey’s book trilogy, Silo has come a long way over its epic three seasons. Juliette’s (Rebecca Ferguson) journey from inquisitive engineer to the spark that ignited a rebellion has made for compelling television. Set in a ravaged future,10,000 people live underground in Silo 18 under strict rules, believing the surface of the Earth is uninhabitable and that they are all that remains of the human race. As Juliette keeps digging for answers, it becomes clear that the lies they have been told hide a far darker truth.

After three seasons of questioning the rules and shocking revelations about the past, Juliette’s rebellion finally has a direct target: Silo 1. Despite showrunner Graham Yost taking a few more creative liberties in season 3, Silo has more than earned its reputation as one of Apple TV’s best sci-fi shows. Every subplot and flashback has been leading to this point, which, from the trailer, looks like an all-out war. Featuring Common, Harriet Walter, Jessica Henwick, and Steve Zahn, the final season will begin on July 9, 2027.

1 'Neuromancer'

Season 1 January 22, 2027

Callum Turner in Neuromancer Image via Apple TV

William Gibson’s groundbreaking cyberpunk novel, Neuromancer, gets a big-budget adaptation from creators Graham Roland and J. D. Dillard. Callum Turner stars as Case, a brilliant but broken cyberspace hacker offered a chance for a fresh start in exchange for his skills. Accepting the job, he teams up with Molly Millions (Briana Middleton), a cybernetically enhanced razor girl assassin, to pull off a daring heist against a powerful corporation.

The seeds of the cyberpunk genre might have been sown in earlier books, but Neuromancer is foundational to the genre that likely wouldn’t exist in its current form without it. For decades, it was deemed unfilmable because of its complex narrative, weighty themes, and use of advanced technology. That didn’t stop Hollywood from trying, with multiple failed attempts to turn Gibson’s work into a movie. It may have taken more than 40 years, but fans of the book should feel reassured: Apple TV is the perfect home for hard sci-fi. The teaser is a neon-bathed delight and shows off more of the cast, including Joseph Lee, Mark Strong, Clémence Poésy, Peter Sarsgaard, Max Irons, and Dane DeHaan. Neuromancer begins its 10-episode run on January 22, 2027.
