Lasith Malinga’s departure from Mumbai Indians’ coaching staff marks the end of an association that helped define the franchise’s identity. As the five-time Indian Premier League champion undertakes a sweeping overhaul of its support staff, it is worth remembering that Malinga’s contribution went well beyond the wickets he took or the titles he helped win.

Malinga joined Mumbai in 2009 and became the spearhead of its bowling attack, using his distinctive action, deceptive slower balls and unerring yorkers to unsettle batters. He was instrumental in four of Mumbai’s five IPL triumphs, including the 2019 final, when he defended seven runs in the last over against Chennai Super Kings. His final delivery in that match, which sealed a one-run victory, was an apt conclusion to his playing career with the franchise.

His influence also extended to Jasprit Bumrah, who developed into one of the world’s finest fast bowlers while sharing the dressing room with the Sri Lankan. Bumrah has acknowledged Malinga’s influence on his ability to consistently execute yorkers. The relationship was not simply one of imitation. Malinga’s experience offered a valuable reference point as Bumrah learnt to navigate the demands of death bowling.

Malinga rejoined Mumbai Indians as bowling coach in 2024 after a spell with Rajasthan Royals, bringing back his knowledge of the franchise’s bowling culture. Mumbai Indians has not won the IPL since its 2020 triumph, a season Malinga missed before retiring from franchise cricket in January 2021. His absence cannot explain the drought, but his exit from the coaching staff costs the side a deep store of experience, especially in developing fast bowlers and death bowling.
