Editor's note: The below contains minor spoilers for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2.
Ever since Dexter premiered back in 2006, viewers have actually rooted for the titular character (Michael C. Hall) to rid the world of some of the worst criminals (Dexter Morgan excluded, of course). While the original series ended in 2013, it inspired several spin-offs, including 2021's Dexter: New Blood, which picked up Dexter's story after the original series finale, and 2024's prequel series Dexter: Original Sin. Viewer support for Dexter has had its ups and downs over the years, but there's one aspect of the original show that fans are still obsessed with.
'Dexter: Resurrection' Season 1 Removed the Original Opening Credits
When Dexter: Resurrection premiered in 2025, fans were eager to follow along with the next leg of Dexter Morgan's journey. While the revival promised lots of suspense and a brand-new villain in Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage), fans were dismayed by the absence of one of Dexter's key elements: the evocative opening title sequence.
Dexter's original credits depict a seemingly normal morning routine, except for particular images that suggest a more sinister undertone. Drops of blood appear in the sink when Dexter cuts himself shaving, meat is sliced up for his breakfast that's reminiscent of human flesh, and a splash of hot sauce on his eggs implies blood spatter, before the last scene features Dexter walking out of his apartment into the bright Miami sun. While the opening credits do boast the names of the creative geniuses behind the series, they also give insight into Dexter's complex life. He might look like your average Joe, but he's definitely hiding some major secrets.
It makes sense that fans were disappointed when Dexter: Resurrection scrapped what made the original title sequence so brilliant, but Season 1 emphasizes that the character is more of a fish out of water without a routine in his new home of New York City. This new iteration of Dexter didn't waste time on credits, but slid in a quick title card, and then moved straight into the storytelling. It's not that this option didn't serve the new series, but it didn't feel as creative as the original Dexter opener.
'Dexter: Resurrection' Season 2 Brings Back the Famous Title Sequence
With its Season 2 premiere, Dexter: Resurrection introduces brand-new credits that share more than a few similarities with the original. Both sequences start the same way — the instantly recognizable theme song, Dexter swatting at a bloodsucking fly on his arm, a close-up of his smirking face, and the show's title revealed in bloody font. A drop of blood lands in the sink while Dexter shaves, followed by the cutting, grilling, and chewing of meat. But then there's a New York twist — this time, Dexter is eating an everything bagel for breakfast, alongside a delicious jelly donut. Dexter also pulls a smothering shirt over his head, allowing his face to pop up and devilishly grin at the camera. But then he winces in pain, reflecting a lingering soreness from his prior New Blood injury after being shot by his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott). The last glimpse we get of our protagonist is him taking the trash out before walking away from his apartment with a sly smile.
Dexter: Resurrection's fresh take on the title sequence is the perfect way to transcend the original series while paying homage to it. There's a symbolic longevity to the character in these new credits, yet the reintroduction of this longer sequence also emphasizes that Dexter is very much back to his old ways. Something as mundane as flossing his teeth is a reminder that he has a predilection for binding and strangling his unlucky victims, when he's not stabbing them on his table.
Plenty of surprises are coming up this season on Dexter: Resurrection, including the ongoing mystery of the New York Ripper (Brian Cox) and the return of Prater's right-hand, Charley Brown (Uma Thurman). Dexter also needs to watch his back after the death of Angel Batista (David Zayas), since it's likely that Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington) will be investigating their friend's death. No matter what twists and turns occur in Season 2, fans have the iconic title sequence back to enjoy in all its macabre glory.
