Egypt seeks African mining alliance to boost mineral value addition

Translate

“Egypt is seeking to build a strong African mining alliance to maximize the value of the continent’s mineral resources through local processing, technology transfer and industrial investment,” Industry Minister Khaled Hashem said Saturday, October 17, 2026.

Speaking at the opening of African Mining Week 2026 in Cape Town, Hashem said closer cooperation among African countries could create new industries, skilled jobs and investment opportunities. Egypt was represented by Industry Assistant Minister for Strategic Industries Mohamed Zada.

Hashem highlighted Egypt’s efforts to strengthen mining cooperation with African countries, including hosting the Egypt Mining Forum last month and organizing the El Alamein Africa Forum.

He stressed that Africa’s mining success should be measured not only by extraction volumes but also by the industries, jobs and community development generated by its mineral wealth.

He called for coordinated efforts by governments, industry and investors to expand local manufacturing and retain a greater share of the value generated from mineral resources.

Egypt is ready to contribute its industrial expertise, skilled workforce and strategic partnerships to these efforts, he said, adding that cooperation could make African economies more integrated and competitive.

Separately, Zada took part in a panel titled “Creating Value Addition for Africa,” which examined ways to link mining and manufacturing, strengthen regional cooperation and promote sustainable industrial development. Participants included Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Monica Musenero and Guinea’s Deputy Industry Minister, Daouda Dakita.
