Batman's Official New Harley Quinn Is A Hit With Fans

Harley Quinn has been brought to life by a number of voice actors over the years, and the latest incarnation of the character officially dropped yesterday. While stepping into the shoes of such a larger-than-life character can invite a lot of criticism, fans seem to be excited about the new take, courtesy of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.

Harley didn't make the cut as a playable character in the base game, as Legacy of the Dark Knight focused on a limited cast with unique mechanics rather than the widespread character-swapping mayhem of older LEGO games. The new Mayhem Mode DLC, however, makes Harley and Joker into playable characters, bringing a new voice to the table for the occasion.

The fresh take on Harley Quinn comes courtesy of Elsie Lovelock, as the voice actress announced yesterday on X. Fans are already taking a shine to her rendition, with X user Lee appreciating that she refrains from the "high-pitched or screechy" tenor that has become a common part of the character's depiction.

This is proving to be a popular opinion overall, with X user dille chiming in to say that Lovelock's approach is "more reminiscent of Arleen Sorkin's original take" in Batman: The Animated Series. In more recent years, Tara Strong has provided a comparatively cartoonish voice for Harley in everything from Batman: Arkham City to appearances in animated shows, with other actresses like Kaley Cuoco and Karlii Hoch filling the role in some projects.

Lovelock's role as Harley in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight doesn't necessarily mean she'll appear in other projects, as the game takes its own approach to voice casting rather than falling in line with any overall standard for DC works. That being said, if the approval of fans ends up being widespread, there's always a chance that other DC projects could take note and consider casting Lovelock in the role again. Even if she doesn't reappear, the (slightly) more grounded voice direction might filter into other portrayals.

At any rate, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight appears to be continuing its winning streak in fans' hearts. Over a decade after the release of Batman: Arkham Knight, fans spent a long time waiting for another game truly worthy of the Caped Crusader's mantle, and LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has risen to the challenge and then some.
