Fable 2 Is Finally Available On PC After 18 Years

Ben Brosofsky has been writing for Screen Rant since 2022 and editing since 2024. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor's in Cinema & Media Arts. Writing serves as a much-needed distraction from tackling a backlog of Steam games that will never be surmounted.

The Fable series is set to make a big comeback with the upcoming reboot game, but for nearly two decades, availability of the franchise has been surprisingly limited. While the original Fable is available on PC as both Fable: The Lost Chapters and the remastered Fable Anniversary, Fable 2 never made it off of Xbox.
Luckily, a new port is finally changing things and opening up the game to a wider audience. While Microsoft itself still hasn't revealed any decision to officially bring Fable 2 to more platforms, one fan has made it possible to natively run the game on PC for the first time.
Github user himdo recently shared an initial release version of a Fable 2 recomp, a project that converts the game's code to work on PC without the use of an emulator. While himdo does not yet "consider this to be fully complete," they've made a 1.0 version available for download and already provided a couple of updates.
Recomp projects have been releasing at a fast pace recently, with fans bringing everything from GameCube games to Xbox 360 titles like Fable 2 to PC for the first time. The Fable 2 project makes use of ReXGlue SDK, a toolkit that makes use of the foundation established by Xbox 360 emulator Xenia to provide support for actual native rendering.
Like a lot of recent recomp projects, though, Fable 2 does come with a catch. Himdo explains that "this project was made to test the capabilities of local and open source AI," using the language model Qwen3.8 27b for coding. While the process also required "a large amount of human trial and error," the use of so-called "vibe coding" may be a concern to interested fans for a variety of reasons.
Hopefully, this project will end up just being a stop-gap, and Microsoft will someday take the time to bring Fable 2 to PC. It's also high time for Fable 3 to return to the platform, as it released on Windows in 2011 but was later delisted from Steam. In the case of Fable 3, it's still possible to get it running with a physical copy and some workarounds to address the discontinued Games for Windows Live DRM, so that's at least something.
In the meantime, PC fans looking for a convenient way to revisit the series before the reboot may still have to stick to the original Fable. There isn't long left to wait, at any rate, with the new Fable set to release on February 23, 2027.
