Steam is no stranger to a free game that completely blows our expectations out of the water. Usually, when you see a free game, it comes with some sort of catch, but in the case of this latest Steam addition, it is available to anybody to download. Well, if you have access to a PC or hardware that runs Steam at least.
Launching on 7 September, Spellbound & Shelved is a 2.5D management and idle simulation game developed by needmoar.games. Set in a wizard's academy library, players will watch little gnomes vanish under their very books and, as such, it will be up to you to help them organize the library and bring back some much-needed order. By hiring more gnomes and unlocking shelves, you will be able to watch the tidying and organization get completed in front of your very eyes as you work or get on with other things.
As the official description for Spellbound & Shelved reads, it is "a cozy idle game about turning magical chaos into calm, one neatly filed spellbook at a time."
Upon starting the game, you will find a chaotic library full to the brim with a lot of books - 6,655 books to be precise. However, fear not, as your gnomes will soon get things back in order. "Six unlockable types of customers visit your library and pay for the privilege of pulling your hard-shelved books back onto the floor," the description continues. "Income and mess have the same source: your customers. So the master lever is the door sign: flip it to CLOSED and the gnomes tidy in blessed peace while the till sits silent; flip it to OPEN and the gold flows while the mess creeps back."
Whilst you may be in charge of hiring and unlocking more shelves to home the tomes, the rest will be up to your workforce. However, if you want more input in this adorable idle sim, you can always snatch up tips, pep talk a gnome to move a little bit faster, or even dawdle some slow customers out of the door. However, you could always do nothing and just sit back, relax, and watch the library breathe.
In Spellbound & Shelved, players can expect over 200 upgrades to unlock, 29 achievements and a full playtime that lasts between 1-3 hours, depending on how much input you have. As such, the magical idler already sits at a 'Very Positive' rating on Steam.
"You know what, I'm not mad at it," one positive review reads. "It does what it is supposed to do. Great for a single easy playthrough in the background while tasking on other things. Achievements are easy enough to get, except the final one (all in 90 minutes), so it will require some thought and planning if you want to 100% it. Otherwise, an entertaining little two hours, and wraps up pretty quickly and easily as you gain progress, doesn't just grind on."
Another agreed, adding, "Cute little game. Coin free and brain free. I needed something like this after a shift. I will probably run it again in the future."
So, if you are on the lookout for a short but sweet idle management game to relax with after a hard day, look no further than Spellbound & Shelved, which, again, is completely free to download right now.
