Goodfellas Boards World Sales On Kamila Andini’s ‘Four Seasons In Java’ Ahead Of Toronto Premiere

Goodfellas has picked up international sales rights to Indonesian filmmaker Kamila Andini’s Four Seasons In Java ahead of its world premiere in the Centrepiece programme at Toronto International Film Festival.

Produced by Ifa Isfansyah through Indonesian production company Forka Films, the film stars Putri Marino as Pertiwi, a woman who returns to her village after years in prison and is forced to confront the people, memories and violence that shaped her past.

Pertiwi’s return is met with rejection from much of the community and even her own family. As she begins to confront the circumstances surrounding her past, she embarks on a deeply personal journey to redefine her understanding of home, family, justice and peace.

The film combines psychological drama, mystery and elements of magical realism, exploring the aftermath of violence against women while examining memory, trauma, social judgement and the possibility of healing.

Andini’s previous films have all played widely and won awards on the international festival circuit. Before, Now & Then, also handled internationally by Goodfellas, premiered in Competition at the Berlinale in 2022, where it won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance for Laura Basuki.

Yuni premiered at Toronto in 2021, where it won the Platform Prize and subsequently became Indonesia’s submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars.

“Four Seasons In Java is a story about a woman who has to face the different seasons of her life and the consequences of what happened to her,” said Andini.

“Pertiwi’s journey is very personal and intimate. It is about finding peace and discovering herself, but also about questioning how society defines what is right and wrong, who is believed and who is not.”

In addition to Putri Marino, the cast is headed by Arya Saloka, Christine Hakim and Hana Malasan, with supporting roles played by Iswadi Pratama, Hargi Sundari, Nagra Kautsar Pakusadewo, Totos Rasiti, Shofia Shireen, Dwika Pradnyana and Hanna Aretha.

Four Seasons In Java is an international co-production involving Indonesia, France, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. The project previously participated in international industry platforms including CineMart, at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), the Berlinale Co-Production Market and the Venice Gap-Financing Market. It has also received support from international film funds including the Hubert Bals Fund, Netherlands Film Fund, Sørfond and CNC France.

Forka Films also produced Andini’s The Seen And Unseen, Yuni and Before, Now & Then, along with Eddie Cahyono’s Siti and Garin Nugroho’s Memories Of My Body, with several of its productions playing at major festivals including Toronto, Berlin and Venice.
