Gillian Anderson's "triumphant" new movie hailed as a "masterpiece" confirms streaming release date

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, the acclaimed satirical horror starring Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder, has gotten a release date for its streaming debut in the UK.

The film is from writer-director Jane Schoenbrun, and sees Einbinder portray filmmaker Kris Williams. She is tasked with reviving the fortunes of a once-popular horror franchise, and has a grand plan in mind.

She wants to recruit Billy Presley (Anderson), the actor from the first film in the franchise, to make an acting comeback. Billy, however, has been a recluse for years, and now lives on the set of the original film.

Featuring Arthur Conti and Eva Victor in supporting roles, the popular film had its worldwide theatrical release in August, and it has now been confirmed that it will come to Mubi on 2 October.

The streaming service can be acquired as an add-on channel for existing Prime Video subscribers, where it costs £11.99 per month after a seven-day free trial. You can also get Mubi on its own for the same price, though you save 33% if you choose the yearly plan.

Following its world premiere at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma was widely lauded by critics, with Rotten Tomatoes currently reporting an impressive approval rating of 94% from 269 reviews.

"Schoenbrun has followed I Saw the TV Glow with a film that, for all the similarities, is really a slice of triumphant feel-good," said The Financial Times, while Pajiba hailed it as a "genuine masterpiece".

"A horror movie that cuts deeply into our relationship to both art and self, capturing the desires and anxieties that come bursting out, it’s not just one of the most bloody fun films of the year, but one of its most unexpectedly, distinctly beautiful," noted The Seattle Times.

The Nightly was also full of praise, writing: "The boundaries between reality and unreality, art and pastiche, magnetism and repulsion, safety and violence all collide in a cinematic phantasmagoria in which nothing is ever certain."
