Kathryn Newton In Talks To Join Mike Birbiglia’s Focus Features Comedy ‘Old Friends New Friends’

EXCLUSIVE: Kathryn Newton (upcoming Avengers: Doomsday) is in talks to join Old Friends New Friends, the new Focus Features comedy from Mike Birbiglia that we scooped last month.

Character details are being kept under wraps. The film, eyeing a fall start, is Birbiglia’s first in a decade — coming on the heels of the ensemble improv troupe comedy Don’t Think Twice and his IFC Sundance prize-winner Sleepwalk with Me.

Newton joins the previously announced Lucas Hedges, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Geraldine Viswanathan and Dylan Gelula in the cast. The film follows a tight-knit group of college friends that travels to a summer camp for their old friend’s wedding, only to discover that he’s built a new life — with new friends — forcing them to confront what they’ve lost, who they’ve become, and whether growing up means growing apart.

Birbiglia is directing from his own script and producing alongside Jacob Jaffke (X trilogy, Dream Scenario) and Joe Hartwick (Maze Runner franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) for Oddball Entertainment.

In constant demand for around a decade, Newton is coming off roles in Searchlight’s Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come and Prime Video’s The Devil’s Mouth. She most recently wrapped on Durango, Hulu’s crime drama pilot from Eliza Clark where she stars opposite Cooper Hoffman, and Roxy Sophie Sorkin’s feature directorial debut, the indie coming-of-age revenge thriller Hot Year. She’ll next be seen starring in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, out December 18th, reprising her role as Cassie Lang from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and will next begin production on Hulu’s YA drama series Just One Day based on the YA romance novels from Gayle Forman.
