Dolly Parton’s Spotify Streams Spiked Over 1,200 Percent Following Icon’s Death

Listeners are turning to Dolly Parton‘s music in droves after the beloved country icon died this week at age 80.

According to data Spotify shared on Wednesday, the streaming service said Parton’s overall streams skyrocketed over 1,260 percent globally on Aug. 25 compared to the seven day average daily average from Aug. 18 to Aug. 24, and an even higher 2,320 percent in the U.S. alone. Seven of Parton’s songs made it into the company’s U.S. daily top songs chart yesterday, with “Jolene” and “9 to 5” taking the No. 2 and 3 slots. “Islands in the Stream” jumped to No. 8.

Spotify didn’t share specific stream counts but provided percentage changes for many of Parton’s top-streamed songs from yesterday.

“Jolene” streams jumped 630 percent globally and 1,225 percent in the U.S., Spotify said, while “9 to 5’s” bumped 630 percent globally and 1,030 percent domestically. Given that some of her smaller hits weren’t streamed as frequently prior to her passing, those tracks had much larger percentage jumps; “My Tennessee Mountain Home,” for example, saw a massive 8,920 percent jump in the U.S. yesterday, while “Coat of Many Colors” saw a  5,330 growth.

In order of streams, Parton’s most-streamed songs on Spotify yesterday were “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Islands in the Stream,” “I Will Always Love You,” “Here You Come Again,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “Tyrant,” Why’d You Come in Here Lookin’ Like That,” “My Tennessee Mountain Home” and “There Was Jesus.”

Parton was one of the most beloved musicians in pop culture history, equally regarded as a performer and songwriter, also holding a legacy as an actor and Hollywood producer, philanthropist who helped millions of children learn to read, and a staunch advocate for the LGBTQ community.

Her death has inspired a wide outpouring of tributes from collaborators and fellow entertainment fixtures including Jane Fonda, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Paul McCartney and Reba McEntire, among many others. Miley Cyrus, Parton’s goddaughter, penned an emotional tribute Wednesday morning as well, writing, “I have an angel by my side. I always have.”

Earlier Wednesday, Parton’s estate had given some insight into how it will be handling the many projects Parton had started before her passing, also confirming there is a biopic, docuseries and scripted series in development. By the sound of it, even with Parton’s death, there will be no shortage of work from her coming in the future.

“Dolly worked up until the day she died,” Parton‘s longtime manager Danny Nozell said in a statement. “She loved seeing her dreams come to life and loved knowing her work brought people joy. Ever the planner, Dolly worked with the team that she handpicked for the past several years to build a project roadmap that will guide us for decades to come.”
