Gear up, Punisher fans: Frank Castle is suiting up in War Machine armor during his latest storyline. Marvel just teased Frank in his personalized Punisher War Machine armor, with its black-and-white color scheme, culminating in a huge Punisher skull embossed on the chestplate. It is a brief look, though. It is going to be another month before he’s in action.
It is a question that comes up about the Punisher a lot: why doesn’t the vigilante hero get himself a suit of Stark-tech armor so he can leave behind battling street level crime and go after a better class of criminal? It’s complicated, but the short answer is that Frank Castle wants to be on the street, and he wants to live on the edge of life and death at all times. (That’s usually how the character is portrayed in his best stories, anyway.) Still, sometimes Frank has to pull out the “big guns” when the job calls for it.
That’s where his War Machine armor comes in. Hardcore Punisher fans will know he’s had his own suit before, for a time. In his latest crossover with Deadpool, the suit turns up in an unexpected place, but at the perfect time for Frank to reclaim it to give himself an upgrade going into the climax of the story.
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Deadpool & Punisher's new crossover!
The Punisher Gets His War Machine Armor Back Just When He Needs "Big Guns" To Finish The Job
Wade Wilson: Deadpool #9, By Benjamin Percy & Geoff Shaw
“Big Guns.” That is the arc that Deadpool, the Punisher, and the villain Bullseye are all currently embroiled in right now. The previous chapter telegraphed the return of Punisher’s high-powered armor, and Frank Castle got the armor back in Wade Wilson: Deadpool #9. The expectation is that Frank Castle will get to put it to good use in the final act of the storyline.
Question 1 of 3
Whether it makes a sustained comeback is the bigger question. It’s possible, because both Wade Wilson: Deadpool and Marvel’s current ongoing Punisher series are written by Benjamin Percy. In fact, the “Big Guns” arc is concluding in Punisher #9, coming in two weeks. Punisher’s War Machine armor is something that Percy could have a lot of fun with, as a writer, which would mean a lot of fun for readers who go along for the ride.
Frank suiting up in Stark-tech is also something that feels inevitable in the MCU. For some Marvel fans, it might be something they don’t even realize they have to see on screen yet. Others are manifesting it hard. The armor’s appearance in this issue is a great reminder of why the concept and the look are so beloved. Artist Geoff Shaw gives readers one good look at it, and the design is superb. Now the creative team just has to make a convincing case for what Frank can do with the suit.
Is The Punisher's War Machine Armor Making A Comeback A Prelude To More?
The Punisher got his War Machine armor in a memorable storyline from 2017. Frank Castle only wore the armor for just under a dozen issues at that time; by the end of 2018, he was back to Kevlar, at best, as far as protecting himself in combat. He eventually gave up the suit, at the time, but could this run with it be different?
Punisher #9 might answer that question, or the Punisher’s War Machine armor could stick around for a while. Especially if Marvel has plans to bring the design into the MCU at some point in the next several years.
Wade Wilson: Deadpool #9 is available now from Marvel Comics; Punisher #9 drops in two weeks, on October 28, 2026.
