The 20th edition of the Solheim Cup is under way, and for the first time in the Netherlands. Angela Stanford’s Americans are the slight favourites and defending champions, but they have not won on European soil since Germany in 2015. The US, as holders, need only 14 of the 28 points available to retain the crystal trophy. Barry Glendenning keeps watch over all five 3pm kick-offs in the Premier League, and will be focusing on two of the afternoon’s most compelling games. Liverpool’s season took ⁠a while to get going under Andoni Iraola but after wins at Ipswich and then Atlético Madrid in the Champions League they will relish another home clash against a Fulham side managed by the former Liverpool player Álvaro Arbeloa. After three successive defeats and seven goals conceded, Arbeloa is already feeling the pressure of management in the top flight. Alongside last season’s top two, only promoted Hull remain unbeaten but their brilliant start faces an acid test against Xabi Alonso’s free-scoring Chelsea.

Formula One

3pmSpanish Grand Prix qualifying live

Kimi Antonelli is Formula One’s man of the moment but Mercedes’ 20-year-old championship leader faces a Monumental challenge in Spain this weekend, along with all his rivals. Fresh from ⁠becoming the first Italian since ⁠1966 to win his home race at Monza, Antonelli will be entering new territory when the Spanish capital’s Madring makes its grand prix debut with its signature La Monumental. The banked curve is a 550m-long high-speed 270-degree bend with a crest on the exit meaning drivers momentarily take it blind as they look up at the sky. Mercedes, winners of nine ‌of the first 13 races, should be in the mix but can expect a tougher fight than Monza, where they finished one-two, putting Antonelli 66 points clear of ‌his teammate George Russell. 5.30pmTottenham v Everton live

Despite a £300m close-season splurge, Roberto De Zerbi’s Spurs are winless in their first three games and without a goal. Little more than three months ago, the Italian completed his Tottenham rescue mission as they beat Everton on the final day of the season to secure their top-flight status. On Saturday, David Moyes’ Everton are the visitors again and, while the stakes are not so high, De Zerbi desperately needs a victory to instil some belief that the money has been well spent. There will be a live blog of the match, with David Hytner reporting from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

7pmUS Open women’s singles final

Elena Rybakina rallied to beat Coco Gauff in a thrilling semi-final to earn a title showdown with the defending champion, Aryna Sabalenka, and take a step towards her third grand slam crown. The pair have met in two previous slam finals, with Sabalenka defeating Rybakina in the 2023 Australian Open decider before the second seed ​levelled the score at Melbourne Park in ‌January. Sabalenka, who will lose her world No 1 status to her opponent on Monday regardless of the result, is seeking to join Chris Evert and Serena Williams as the only women to win three straight US Open titles. Stability has been the order of the day at Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta’s side straight back into last term’s groove. Arsenal visit Sunderland, a fixture they will be wary of after being held to a 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light last season. The Gunners made it four wins from four with a 1-0 victory at Napoli in their Champions League opener on Wednesday night and – with three victories in the Premier League already under their belt – show no signs of faltering. After three bruising contests, South Africa go in search of a third successive Test victory over ⁠the All Blacks that would secure the four-game series for the world champions and lay down a marker for next year’s title defence. The ⁠final game of New ⁠Zealand’s six-week, ​eight-match tour of South Africa is being played in the United States as the top-ranked sides in the world look ⁠to promote the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series to a wider audience at the 70,000-seater home of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. Ryan Garcia enters his WBC welterweight title fight showdown with Conor Benn carrying the belt but understanding that winning the belt and establishing himself as a legitimate champion are different accomplishments. The American captured the first recognised world title of his turbulent career in February, dominating his compatriot Mario Barrios over 12 rounds for a unanimous decision. The performance showcased a more disciplined, complete fighter than the social media phenomenon who built his reputation on blinding speed and a devastating left hook. Now he must prove that victory began a sustained championship run. His first defence comes at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where personal hostility and contrasting styles should produce a revealing test. United lost to London City last weekend as Eva Olid took charge of the club for the first time in the WSL while Sonia Bompastor’s Chelsea were held by Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge despite battering the visitors with 35 shots. The Hoops’ only blemish this term remains their Champions League playoff capitulation away to Lask, and overcoming their Old Firm rivals at Ibrox to reach the semi-final of the Premier Sports Cup would help maintain their momentum. There will, however, be no Celtic fans in attendance after the recent decision not to allow away supporters at any matches between the two Glasgow giants this term to avoid the trouble that marred last season’s Scottish Cup collision. The anxiety from the Light Blues legions, which has been prevalent in some games in Govan, resurfaced on Wednesday night as the home side struggled in the Premiership match against St Mirren after missing several chances before the break. However, a pressure valve was released when Bojan Miovski scored in stoppage time for a crucial 1-0 win, making it four victories in a row for Derek McInnes and his side. 2pmSpanish Grand Prix

John Brewin has lap-by-lap coverage as Formula One sweeps into Madrid for a first look at the Madring. Mercedes are in the ascendant and Kimi Antonelli can still put the equivalent of three race wins between him and Russell, with the Briton chasing a first win since Austria in June to prevent his title hopes from withering further. McLaren, who won in the Netherlands and Hungary with the reigning world champion, Lando Norris, and have Oscar Piastri hungry to open his account, could be the main rivals. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc drove the Madring when it was still a building site on a scorching filming day in July but there is an underlying tension in the camp after last weekend’s opening-lap shenanigans at Monza.

4.30pmManchester United v Manchester City live

After all the pre-season optimism, United’s start to the season has been inconsistent but Sunday’s derby offers Michael Carrick’s side an early chance ⁠to show they are contenders. City, meanwhile, arrive at Old Trafford with a perfect record under their new manager, Enzo Maresca, although their performances have suggested there is still work to do after Pep Guardiola’s departure. Carrick’s impact at United last season as interim manager after the club’s parting of ways with Ruben Amorim in January was dramatic, beginning with a 2-0 home victory over City. Their rivals will provide an acid test, especially with Erling Haaland firing on all cylinders having scored both goals in the 2-0 win at Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday to make it five goals in three games so far this season. The men’s singles semis pitted Alexander Zverev against Karen Khachanov and Frances Tiafoe with Ben Shelton. The latter pairing are on a quest to become the first American men’s grand slam champion ⁠since Andy Roddick’s 2003 triumph at Flushing Meadows. Whoever emerges victorious will collide in Sunday evening’s final, and Ella Brockway has live blog commentary of the showdown.
