Halo 3 has always been regarded as the pinnacle of multiplayer excellence within the first-person shooter space, and it's not hard to see why. While the game's narrative is certainly one to be remembered, the game's defining feature was its brilliant multiplayer mode, a facet of its design that spawned countless iterations, fueled an abundance of creativity from the community, and created lasting memories. To have been a part of its multiplayer scene in the early days was enviably glorious.

However, that's not to say that Halo 3's multiplayer can't still instill within its community those same emotions. Indeed, while we're a far cry from Halo's golden age, Halo 3's multiplayer continues to be an endlessly enjoyable experience, one so inspired fans are finding new ways of injecting it with a new lease on life. One such method of rejuvenation comes in the form of a chaotic new mode that brings 128 players into the same space, a gameplay experience that everyone must try for themselves, and one that will remind you of just how important Halo truly is.

As we await news on whether the fabled Halo 3 remake will ever eventuate, one must rely on the hard work and determination of the game's dedicated community to deliver new content. Fortunately, the modding scene for Halo 3 is extraordinary, with users producing all manner of additions and enhancements for the title, resulting in some of the most fun and unique ways to engage with the nearly two-decade-old game. One such mod is the recently released Project Reclaimer, which expands upon the multiplayer side of things exponentially.

This massive new Halo 3 mod revamps the multiplayer lobbies, making the once formative rules and innovations of yesteryear feel tiny in comparison. With Project Reclaimer, up to 128 players can join a single lobby, split into two teams of 64. It adds a healthy dose of chaos to the mix, although it never feels unplayable with the UI scaled to compensate for the sudden influx of players. 128 is certainly a step up from the original limited 16-player lobbies, and gives Halo 3 an almost Battlefield-esque feel, even if the smaller maps don't quite facilitate that many people.

The expanded lobbies aren't the only thing Project Reclaimer adds, although they are certainly its magnum opus. In addition to letting 128 players duke it out on the battlefield, Project Reclaimer also introduces four-player split-screen, 16-player campaign co-op, dedicated servers, scripted game modes, an improved Forge mode, and so much more. It's a staggeringly ambitious mod and one that is available for free. Those who are interested can download it from its official website, but you'll need a copy of The Master Chief Collection on PC to run it.

Project Reclaimer illustrates just how much reverence there is for Halo 3 and how ahead of the curve Bungie was when developing it. It's impressive just how many people continue to flock back to the title, mods installed or otherwise. One can only hope that when Halo 7, or whatever the next Activision-developed installment looks like, is released, it lives up to the lofty expectations established by Halo 3 that the modern games have failed to live up to thus far.
