The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a shock 3-0 defeat to the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Matchday 2 encounter at the September 24 Stadium in Bissau on Tuesday night.

The heavy defeat has piled pressure on the Super Eagles in their bid to qualify for the 2027 AFCON finals, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The loss came just days after Nigeria laboured to an uninspiring 2-1 home victory over Madagascar’s Barea, further raising concerns over the team’s form and performance.

Super Eagles’ Attack Fails To Click

Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has a wealth of attacking talent at his disposal, but his forwards struggled to make an impact as Nigeria’s attack failed to fire on the occasion.

Former African Player of the Year Ademola Lookman, along with Akor Adams and Taiwo Awoniyi, all delivered below-par performances, with none able to provide the cutting edge the Super Eagles needed in the final third.

The introduction of Moses Simon, Moses Usor and George Ilenikhena in the second half also failed to spark a significant improvement, as Nigeria continued to struggle for creativity and attacking cohesion.

Bassey, Iwobi Shine On Difficult Night

On a day when the majority of their teammates struggled to live up to expectations, Fulham duo Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi stood out with impressive performances for the Super Eagles.

Bassey showcased his strength and composure at the back, effectively dealing with the threat posed by Guinea-Bissau’s forwards while also making purposeful contributions going forward.

Former Arsenal midfielder Iwobi was equally influential in the middle of the park. His vision and creativity were central to much of Nigeria’s smooth attacking play, as he consistently looked to unlock the opposition’s defence.

Super Eagles Struggle On Poor Pitch And In Harsh Weather

The poor condition of the playing surface at the September 24 Stadium undoubtedly affected the Super Eagles’ performance in the Group L encounter.

The European-based players, accustomed to playing on well-maintained, lush green pitches, struggled to impose their passing game on the uneven surface.

The difficult pitch also made it challenging for the team to maintain possession and build attacks with fluidity, as several players found it difficult to control the ball, execute accurate passes and maintain their rhythm.

Éric Chelle’s men also had to contend with harsh weather conditions in Bissau, adding to the challenges they faced throughout the encounter.

Full-Backs Left Too Isolated

Full-backs Bright Osayi-Samuel and Bruno Onyemaechi endured difficult evenings as they struggled to contain Guinea-Bissau’s marauding and fleet-footed forwards.

Onyemaechi was easily turned by Trabzonspor striker Franculino Dju for the Djurtus’ opening goal, while Osayi-Samuel was skinned by captain Mama Baldé for the second.

The duo were repeatedly tormented by the hosts throughout the game, with little or no defensive support from the wingers, leaving the full-backs exposed in one-on-one situations.

The Wild Dogs Too Aggressive For Super Eagles

The Djurtus showed greater hunger, intensity and determination to win the game, despite the difficult weather conditions and poor playing surface.

The hosts, ranked 132nd in the FIFA rankings, fought for every ball and proved more clinical in front of goal when their chances came.

Nigeria struggled to cope with the pace, directness and trickery of Guinea-Bissau’s forwards, who consistently put the Super Eagles’ defence under pressure.
