A previously unreleased recording of the late Glen Hansard covering Shane MacGowan’s “Bottle of Smoke” has arrived as the latest preview of 20th Century Paddy – The Songs of Shane MacGowan, a tribute album honoring the legendary Pogues frontman.

Recorded in October 2024, Hansard’s rendition of the song from The Pogues‘ 1988 album If I Should Fall from Grace with God takes on serious weight following the Irish singer-songwriter’s death in July at age 56. The two musicians shared a close friendship, with Hansard famously joining Lisa O’Neill for a performance of “Fairytale of New York” at MacGowan’s funeral in 2023. O’Neill performed “Old Note” at Hansard’s funeral this past August.

“I’m eternally grateful to Glen for being such an incredible friend to both myself and Shane and for being such an integral part of making this album possible,” MacGowan’s widow, Victoria Mary Clarke, said in a statement. “He did a magnificent version of ‘Bottle of Smoke’ and he infused it with all of the soul and spirit and passion that he was famous for.”

The recording also celebrates the musicians’ commitment to helping Dublin’s homeless community. At least 50% of artist royalties from the tribute album will benefit the Dublin Simon Community, an organization both artists supported throughout their lives. Hansard was also a driving force behind the annual Christmas Eve busking tradition on Dublin’s Grafton Street, which the DSC organises.

Due November 13th, 20th Century Paddy also features contributions from Bruce Springsteen, U2, Tom Waits, Hozier, and more.
