Ilenikhena relishes Eagles call-up, eyes silverware

George Ilenikhena’s impressive start to life at Al-Ittihad has earned him his first senior invitation to the Super Eagles, and the Lagos-born striker says representing Nigeria is a moment he is immensely proud of.

The 20-year-old forward, who previously featured for Amiens, Royal Antwerp and Monaco, joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad and quickly attracted attention with his performances. His form earned him a place in Éric Chelle’s 24-man squad for Nigeria’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

For Ilenikhena, however, the call-up means more than recognition for his club form.

“It is an honour, and I am very proud to wear the shirt because I was born here. It’s a big thing to represent the country,” he said.

The striker revealed that sharing the news with his parents was one of his first reactions after receiving the invitation.

“When I had my first call-up, I called my mom and my dad,” he said.

Ilenikhena said he is excited to finally represent Nigeria and wants to use the opportunity to show supporters what he can offer.

“To be honest, I’m very happy, really excited to be here and represent Nigeria and show the fans my quality.”

The youngster also promised to give his best whenever he gets the chance to play for the three-time African champions.

“I will give my best and show everybody that I am ready to play.”

And while his maiden invitation is a personal milestone, Ilenikhena has already set his sights on winning trophies with the Super Eagles.

“My personal goal is to win all the tournaments we, the Super Eagles, play in,” he added.
