Malang, E Java (ANTARA) - Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park authorities are monitoring two responders who suffered severe burns in a wildfire that killed four people at Pusung Lingker on Mount Bromo, East Java.

Park chief Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha said here Friday that the two responders had been transferred from Tongas Regional General Hospital in Probolinggo District to Dr. Soetomo Regional General Hospital in Surabaya, the capital of East Java Province.

“Two responders, Munawi and Suraji, suffered severe burns. We will continue coordinating with relevant parties to ensure proper care for the victims, who remain hospitalized,” Rudijanta said.

Four other responders died in the wildfire at Pusung Lingker. The four fatalities were identified as Sukaris, Wisnu Yuda Pratama, Sefriel Ardiansyah and Hendra Rony Wagiyanata.

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority, under the Forestry Ministry’s Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation, expressed its deepest condolences to the victims’ families, he said.

Park authorities first received a report of the fire at about 2:23 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13.

The fire broke out on farmland near Block Pusung Dawa, bordering national park land at Grid A83 in Ngadirejo Village, Probolinggo District.

In response, park officials contacted village authorities and requested additional personnel.

Park staff and village officials rushed to the site to fight the fire, but the lack of nearby water and difficult access for water pumps forced them to extinguish it manually using fire beaters.

Despite efforts to contain it, the fire spread into the national park and was extinguished at about 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14.

At 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, the Cemoro Lawang Forest Fire Post spotted thick smoke rising from the same location.

As the fire intensified, officials requested additional personnel, who headed to the area to help contain the blaze and establish firebreaks.

“At around 1 p.m., a sudden burst of flames trapped six responders amid the fire, while five others escaped because they were on the opposite side of the flames,” Rudijanta said.
