Nepal-Tibet floods: S’pore to contribute $127,000 to Singapore Red Cross fund-raising efforts

SINGAPORE – Singapore will contribute US$100,000 (S$127,000) as seed money for the Singapore Red Cross’ (SRC) public fundraising efforts in response to severe floods along the Nepal-China border this week.

The contribution will support humanitarian relief efforts in Nepal and address the immediate needs of affected communities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement on Aug 28.

On Aug 27, the SRC pledged $50,000 in humanitarian aid to support response efforts in the areas hit by deadly flash floods and landslides on Aug 26.

SRC said in a statement that the funds raised will be committed to response efforts by the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement partners.

These include distributing drinking water and emergency supplies, such as tarpaulins, blankets, sleeping mats, first-aid kits and body bags.

SRC also launched a public fund-raising appeal on Aug 28 for communities affected by the disaster.

The confirmed death toll from the disaster rose to 475 on the evening of Aug 28, with almost 1,000 more missing there and in Tibet. Of those missing, more than 500 are foreigners, including nine Singaporeans.
