SASSA grant top-ups in October 2026: No news spells BAD news

South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant top-ups in October 2026 are on the lips of millions of social welfare beneficiaries. The nation’s ‘core’ grants include Older Person’s, Disability, Care Dependency and three different Childcare stipends.
However, these beneficiaries still don’t know whether SASSA grant top-ups in October 2026 will bring any kind of relief. In typical administrative fashion, this year’s Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) – the document that normally confirms such matters – only lands after October’s payments have rolled off …
SASSA GRANT TOP-UPS IN OCTOBER 2026
Are we surprised? The National Treasury and South African Social Security Agency have been out of step like this before. You might recall, last year, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana attempted to push through a contentious VAT increase in his February 2025 Budget Speech.
The trade-off was above-inflation SASSA grant increases for core beneficiaries. These were approved and went ahead in April 2025. The only problem was the minister’s next three consecutive budgets were rejected. It was only mid-year when a fiscal budget was agreed upon, at which point reversing the larger-than-expected April 2025 increases was impossible.
SASSA ABSORBING THE COST EVER SINCE

As a result, SASSA has effectively been absorbing the financial consequences – like budgetary whiplash – ever since. And that’s why experts don’t expect any notable SASSA grant top-ups in October 2026. So, let’s focus on what we do actually know about next month’s disbursements …
Back in April 2026, SASSA Older Person, Disability and Care Dependency all rose by R80 to R2 400. At the same time, War Veterans grant and Older Person (over 75) climbed to R2 420. Meanwhile, SASSA Child Support went up by a trifling R20 to R580.
DEPARTURE FOR SASSA GRANT TOP-UPS IN OCTOBER 2026
The aforementioned represents a genuine departure from the last two years. In both October 2024 and October 2025, core grants received a small bump of R10 each time. Granted, pensioner groups have continued marching to parliament demanding a R5 000-per-month pension, so does R10 even touch sides for them?
Interestingly, the Treasury’s Budget Review does show SASSA Foster Care as scheduled for a R10 increase in October 2026, taking it from R1 290 to R1 300. But why only this one lone grant that applies to just a few thousand court-appointed beneficiaries? It doesn’t make a lot of sense and suggests that perhaps the typical agency administrative inefficiency might be to blame.
