#SHOWBIZ: 6 contemporary cinematic gems mark Italian Screens festival in KL

KUALA LUMPUR: Italian cinema returns to Malaysia this September with Italian Screens, a three-weekend festival bringing six modern Italian films to the Klang Valley.

Running from Sept 26 to Oct 11 at GSC Mid Valley, the showcase is presented by the Embassy of Italy in Kuala Lumpur alongside Cinecittà and GSC International Screens.

The initiative—backed by the Italian Ministry of Culture and Foreign Affairs—was created by Cinecittà's international director, Roberto Stabile, to share Italian stories worldwide and build cultural ties.

The curated line-up offers a mix of comedy, drama, and family tales.

C'è Ancora Domani (There's Still Tomorrow) follows a resilient woman who navigates family and societal expectations in post-war 1946 Rome. It is set against the backdrop of Italy's historic first vote for women.

Diamanti (Diamonds) is a warm story highlighting friendship, creativity, and female solidarity, while La Vita Da Grandi (Siblings) presents a thoughtful look at growing up and the quirks of family life.

Two children embark on an inspiring journey of courage and discovery from post-war Italy to America in Napoli-New York (Naples to New York).

Benvenuti In Campagna (Green Family) showcases a lighthearted, witty peek into the contradictions of rural life.

Il Bene Comune (The Greater Good) features an engaging drama about personal choice versus community responsibility.

At the festival's official launch at GSC Mid Valley yesterday, There's Still Tomorrow played to a full house of media representatives and diplomats.

"Bringing Italian cinema to Malaysian audiences is a vital part of our cultural outreach. This selection reflects the energy of Italian storytelling today, covering everything from personal identity to broader social change," said Italian Ambassador Raffaele Langella during the event.

All films will be screened in Italian with English subtitles. Tickets are priced at RM15 and can be booked online at www.gsc.com.my.
