Formula 1 will shorten its standard race distance from 305km to 290km from the 2027 season, with the change expected to reduce most grands prix by two or three laps.
The decision was approved by the Formula 1 Commission during a meeting in London, chaired by F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA Single-Seater Director Nikolas Tombazis.
The FIA said the shorter races are part of a wider adjustment linked to the sport’s new power unit regulations, which come into force in 2027.
“In line with the refinements to the power unit regulations to be introduced in 2027 on fuel flow, a reduction in the total race distance from 305km to 290km was approved, corresponding to a reduction of two or three laps,” the FIA said in a statement.
The 2027 power units are set to place greater emphasis on combustion-engine output, with the contribution from the hybrid electrical system reduced compared with the current generation.
The commission has also changed the rules governing race interruptions. The existing three-hour limit for the overall event will be removed, giving organisers greater scope to complete the scheduled race distance after weather-related delays or red-flag stoppages.
The two-hour limit on actual racing time will remain in place.
Practice sessions will also have greater flexibility under the revised regulations, allowing them to be extended when stoppages disrupt the scheduled running.
The changes are part of a broader overhaul of Formula 1’s sporting and technical regulations ahead of the 2027 season.
