Translate

The US midterm elections delivered a series of historic firsts by electing a Black female governor, a Native American governor, and a senator.

Here is a snapshot of the landmark outcomes of the elections:

Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, the former Atlanta mayor, was elected as Georgia governor - the first Black female governor in the country.

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan's keenly fought Senate race, defeating Republican Mike Rogers to become the chamber's first Muslim member.

Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy to become Ohio's first female governor.

California scripted history by electing Democrat Xavier Becerra as the state's first elected Latino governor.

Democrat Gina Hinojosa was elected as the first Latina governor of Texas, a state that saw a highly divisive campaign on the immigration issue.

Deb Haaland, the former US Interior Secretary, was elected as the first Native American governor of New Mexico.

Minnesota's lieutenant governor Peggy Flanagan became the first Native American woman to be elected to the US Senate.

Democrat Chris Pappas was elected to the US Senate from New Hampshire, making him the first out gay man to serve in the chamber.

Democrat David Crowley won Wisconsin's governor race, becoming the first Black person to hold the office.

Republican Byron Donalds was elected as Florida's first Black governor, succeeding Ron DeSantis who reached his term limit.

Tennessee elected its first female governor as Republican Marsha Blackburn defeated Democrat Jerri Green.
