Warning! SPOILERS ahead about Fire Country season 5, episode 2.At the heart of Fire Country has always been redemption, given its focus on inmate firefighters, and Fire Country season 5 finally introduced a redemption story worthy of replacing Bode’s. Although Bode’s path changed greatly, as Fire Country season 3 saw him take his place on Station 42’s crew and season 4 had him join Cal Fire’s elite group of firefighters, he began his journey as a Three Rock inmate firefighter in Fire Country season 1. While being back in Edgewater inevitably influenced Bode, as it meant he was closer to family, his role within Three Rock was also important.
At the fire camp, Bode learned to be a firefighter and a leader, inspiring his fellow inmates through tough rescue calls and even becoming First Saw. Bode would have never gotten to where he is in Fire Country season 5 without Manny’s support, and Manny’s own journey was also positively influenced by conservation camps, as he had managed to reduce his prison sentence in the past and in Fire Country season 3 through inmate firefighting. Their empowering storylines were among the biggest centering Three Rock throughout Fire Country, and were sorely missed as Manny and Bode had their redemption arcs.
Fire Country season 5 may finally fix this mistake through Angel’s story. Transferred to Three Rock and unveiled as Manny’s nephew in Fire Country season 5’s premiere, Angel’s presence became immediately contentious, as Manny was sure of his ill intentions. Fire Country season 5, episode 2 proving Manny right nonetheless gives Angel the biggest chance to redeem himself.
Fire Country Season 5, Episode 2 Proves Manny Right & Sets Up Angel's Redemption
Ever since Manny realized Angel was among Three Rock’s new arrivals in Fire Country season 5’s premiere, he made it his purpose to convince Eve that his nephew shouldn’t stay at the fire camp, as his intentions weren’t pure. Despite not seeing Angel for a decade, Manny was sure his nephew couldn’t have changed, going against his long-held belief that everyone deserved a second chance and nobody was their worst mistake.
Angel taking a call from his father in prison in Fire Country season 5, episode 2’s very ending proved Manny’s concerns right. However, his being this involved in his father’s organization also puts Angel at his lowest, meaning he has time and space to realize his mistakes and choose a path to redemption. This can indubitably be a challenge for Manny too, as sharing a past with Angel turns his nephew into Gabriela’s replacement for what Angel can elicit from Manny in terms of his opposition to his nephew based on his preconceived notions, which can let Manny grow.
Despite being on his side, Eve noticed Angel might not be at Three Rock for the right reasons, too. His comment about going through the program to get out of prison as soon as possible in Fire Country season 5, episode 2 showed Eve where Manny was coming from in his mistrust, as wanting to change didn’t seem Angel’s main focus at Three Rock. Even that nonetheless hints at Angel’s potential redemption being an extremely satisfying storyline, as Eve could easily become one of Angel’s role models.
Why Angel's Redemption Story Can Be The Most Compelling
Throughout Fire Country season 1, Bode’s struggles were several, but he never had to fight a tendency to choose the easy path or have someone try to lead him astray, except for Sleeper, whom Bode refused to take the bait from while still at Three Rock. Returning to prison almost prompted Bode to kill Sleeper, threatening to push him over the edge, and yet, Bode saved Sleeper in the end. Angel’s redemption can follow a similar path to Bode’s storyline between Fire Country seasons 1 and 2, but with even higher stakes.
In telling Eve and Camille about his brother and nephew, Manny didn’t shy away from admitting how dangerous his family of origin was. This establishes how hard the pull might be for Angel to stay close to his family and follow their lead how he had always done. At the same time, Manny running under gunfire to bring Angel an EpiPen and effectively save his life proved he cares about his nephew, and while that doesn’t cancel his turning his back on his brother, it shows that despite everything, Manny still cares.
Eve’s suggestion to enjoy the little freedoms Three Rock awards Angel and pursue becoming a better person also establishes her as a future role model for him. Having family pulling Angel back while Eve and Manny show him a different future raises the stakes for Angel’s redemption arc, as whatever he chooses, he will disappoint someone he cares about. This makes Angel’s story in Fire Country season 5 a true successor to Bode’s, as it can prove just as epic.
