Snoop Dogg Takes Credit for Bringing VMAs to L.A. in Opening Monologue: ‘Biggest Party the VMAs Has Ever Seen’

Snoop Dogg has just about seen it all in his decorated career, and he can now add hosting the MTV Video Music Awards to his résumé, as the Doggfather played host at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday (Sept. 27).

The MTV VMAs have called the East Coast home since 2018, and Snoop is taking credit for bringing the ceremony back to the West Coast. “When they first asked me to host this award show, I said, ‘Is it gonna be in L.A.?’ I said, ‘No? Well, I’m busy,'” Snoop said in his opening monologue. “They called me back and said, ‘Hold on, Mr. Dogg. It’s in L.A. now.'”

The Death Row icon promised to host the biggest party in L.A. history, and he’s even gifting all of the night’s winners with a special surprise.

“So having this show hosted by me in my city means two things: One, tonight is going to be the biggest party the VMAs has ever seen,” he boasted. “And two, it wouldn’t be a Snoop Dogg party if I didn’t provide some of that special sticky icky icky. Hold on, that’s for every winner here tonight.”

The West Coast legend also hyped up the crowd by naming some of his “favorite people” in the building that would be part of the show, including Madonna, who kicked off the show, and Taylor Swift.

Providing some comic relief with a brief stand-up attempt, the 54-year-old finished his monologue with a “Deez Nuts” knock-knock joke.

Snoop Dogg has plenty of history with the VMAs dating back to the ’90s. He first performed Doggystyle‘s “Murder Was the Case” at the 1993 award show.
