Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism prepares a roadmap for wellness tourism industry players to foster growth and enhance quality across the sector.

"We are drafting the roadmap to provide information for domestic and international communities regarding Indonesia's wellness products, destinations, services, and industry stakeholders," Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana told a press conference in Jakarta on Friday.

She noted experiences integrating wellness activities, self-care, and physical and mental balance are gaining popularity among tourists.

Citing data from the Global Wellness Institute in 2024, global wellness tourism spending reached US$893.9 billion, up 13.8 percent from the previous year. Meanwhile, the Asia-Pacific region recorded 562.7 million wellness trips, with total spending reaching US$215 billion.

Wardhana noted the sector's potential could have a significant impact on the national economy.

Therefore, the ministry has begun positioning wellness tourism as part of its special interest tourism development under a priority program aimed at driving quality tourism.

Previously, the ministry launched a guidebook and concept roadmap titled "Wellness Journey Across the Java Wonders", which outlines 10 travel routes and themes highlighting nature and culture based wellness potential in Java.

Another initiative taken is organizing the "Wonderful Indonesia Scale Up Hub" program to provide business mentorship for tour package, gastronomy, and wellness providers to enhance business capacity and market readiness.

"Meanwhile, from an investment perspective, the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Kura Kura Bali SEZ offer opportunities to develop facilities and services that support the health, wellness, and quality tourism industries," she remarked.

Regarding the event development, she added the ministry has provided support for various wellness events, including the Jogjakarta Cultural Wellness Festival (JCWF) 2026, set to take place from November 6 to 8.

"These events are crucial amid today's highly competitive landscape and turbulent geopolitical situation, which have heightened tensions everywhere. We need peace of mind, physical wellness, and mental clarity to restore harmony," she said.

In addition, Wardhana expressed hope that hosting such events would spur economic activity while creating job opportunities for local communities.
