Sullivan, 17, becomes youngest USMNT scorer with stunner vs. Mexico

Translate

Rising star Cavan Sullivan became the youngest scorer in United States men's national team history, after the teenager found the net with a stunning effort from distance in Saturday's friendly against rival Mexico.

Philadelphia Union midfielder Sullivan scored in the 62nd minute of the clash in Glendale, Arizona, intercepting a pass from goalkeeper Raúl Rangel midway inside the Mexico half before lobbing the ball expertly into the unguarded net.

At 17 years and five days, Sullivan takes the record as the USMNT's youngest scorer just four days after Mathis Albert, at 17 years and 131 days, had set the mark with his goal against Chile.

The record was previously held by Christian Pulisic (17 years, 253 days).

Sullivan's goal made it 2-0 to a youthful U.S. team after 18-year-old Julian Hall opened the scoring in the first half.

In doing so, Hall became just the third player to score in each of his first three appearances for the USMNT, after Eddie Johnson (2004-05) and Alexander Rae (1937).
