‘Isibaya’ actress ARRESTED after 198km/h BMW dash

Translate

Former Isibaya actress Asavela Mqokiyana has been arrested after allegedly clocking 198km/h in a BMW X3 on the N2 in KwaZulu-Natal.

Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers caught the actress and model near Ellingham, allegedly driving 78km/h above the 120km/h speed limit.

KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma confirmed her arrest on Tuesday, 27 October, amid a province-wide crackdown on speeding motorists.

Mqokiyana is expected back in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 28 October, to face a speeding charge.

ACTRESS BACK IN COURT

The actress appeared in court on 19 October and will return to the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 28 October.

Her arrest forms part of Operation Nenzani La Ezweni, which targets speeding and reckless driving across the province.

Duma warned motorists that traffic officers would maintain a tough stance ahead of the festive season.

“RTI will have no mercy this festive season, as demonstrated this Transport Month,” he said.

OVER 400 SPEEDING CHARGES IN ONE WEEK

Between 15 and 21 October, RTI and Operation Shanela teams recorded:

  • 421 speeding charges.
  • 12 073 vehicles stopped.
  • 1 719 motorists charged.
  • 140 vehicles impounded for operating without permits.
  • 87 motorists charged for driving without licences.

Authorities also charged 141 motorists for failing to wear seatbelts and recorded 112 unlicensed vehicles.

Duma said officials planned more than 26 multidisciplinary operations between 22 and 28 October, alongside 15 additional operations targeting drunk driving.

The MEC warned that traffic officers would show no leniency towards motorists who break the law.
