Who is Gary? Meet The Great British Bake Off 2026 contestant and retired technologist
The Great British Bake Off is returning to Channel 4 – and with new judge Nigella Lawson to impress, the 12 contestants have their work cut out for them.
Tasked with bespoke bakes each week, retired garment technologist Gary is hoping to impress Nigella and fellow judge Paul Hollywood with creative takes on the challenges.
If he makes it to week 3 – audience choice week – there's one challenge that looks tailor-made for him... the first ever wearable bake challenge. (But don't worry, no one has to actually wear them).
But will Gary be stitched-up before the challenge arrives?
Speaking ahead of the series launch, Paul said of the challenge: "[All the contestants did] surprisingly well! You know, you're never going to get an even standard with everyone, but you know, they really do pull it out of the bag when they need to.
"You know, It is quite amazing because these are not easy challenges, they wouldn't be easy for a professional baker, I think."

Gary is a 67-year-old retired garment technologist from Nottinghamshire who discovered his love of baking later in life.
He lives with wife of over 30 years, Donna, and his two Border Collies, Ollie and Alfie, on a smallholding filled with animals, including sheep, horses, chickens and miniature pygmy goats and Shetland ponies.
Gary is a methodical and precise baker who discovered his love of baking later in life. He bought his first cookbook in a gift shop five years ago and hasn’t looked back, developing a traditional yet creative style with a focus on impeccable presentation and bold flavours, particularly citrus.
Having beat prostate cancer himself, Gary is passionate about raising awareness and funds for cancer charities through bake sales and coffee mornings but never imagined it would lead him to the tent.
"I dreamt about it and getting on it. But I always thought it was going to be difficult because of the thousands that apply to get on," Gary said.
"My reaction was emotional and disbelief. It took me a few days to believe I actually got picked."
What is Gary's secret baking "super power"?
Whilst Gary describes his baking style as "traditional and varied", his baking super power is simply "perfection".
