South America is already breaking records.
South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone met in 1992 and created crude animated shorts, which became an early viral phenomenon. After Fox passed on developing a series, Parker and Stone brought the idea of creating South Park to Comedy Central, and it premiered in 1997. Since its release, the dark comedy series has been a major success, with an Academy Award-nominated movie and a huge number of audiences from around the world tuning in for each season.
South America, formerly known as South Park, has just begun its 29th season; however, not everyone is pleased with the new season's direction. Audiences have reviewed season 29 on Rotten Tomatoes, and the rating has officially broken records, but for all the wrong reasons. South America season 29 has debuted at 48%, which is the second-lowest Rotten Tomatoes rating for the entire series, following season 28, which reached only 31%.
Reviews from audiences for South Park season 29 stated, "What happened??? One of the greatest shows in the history of the world. One of the most fantastic satires’ and outrageous commentary on social political issues has turned to utter garbage in just a few seasons. So I ask…..what happened??," and "I used to love South Park, but now it's 20 minutes of repeating the political message of the episode without jokes and then abruptly ending without any closure or progress, just 'times out send in the credits'."
Question 1 of 3
However, not everyone has the same negative reaction to the new season of South America and have said, "People are still whining about how bad this show is just because Matt and Trey are making fun of politics that's so dumb this season is so good, and I'm hoping for season 30."
The recent seasons have been criticized by even the White House due to their ongoing gag surrounding President Donald Trump. However, Parker and Stone have a long tradition of equal-opportunity satire and don't hold back in criticizing anyone and don't identify as a single political party. The creators ensure that all signs of hypocrisy, cultural fads, and extremes across the political left and right are highlighted while focusing on real world issues and making them something people can find humor in.
South Park/America continues to be a long-standing animated success, and clearly shows no signs of slowing down. All episodes of the hit series can be streamed on Paramount+.
