Unhas hosts students from 14 countries for culture, conservation

Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA) - Hasanuddin University (Unhas) in Makassar, South Sulawesi Province, is hosting students from 14 countries for a program combining cultural exchange, community service and marine conservation.
Ishaq Rahman, a Unhas public relations official, said the university’s internationalization directorate and international office organized the 2026 Unhas International Student Outing (UISO) Program around cultural exchange, community service and marine exploration.
Bringing international students into contact with local communities, cultures and environmental issues is important to building a globally minded university, he said here Wednesday.
Unhas has 580 international students, whose diversity helps foster an open academic environment and strengthen intercultural ties on and off campus, he said.
Participants visited Unhas’ Marine Station on Barrang Lompo Island to learn about education, research and community service activities that use marine ecosystems as learning environments.
They also learned about breeding and conserving giant clams, marine animals that play an important role in coral reef ecosystems.
The next day, students explored Kodingareng Keke Island, including snorkeling, to learn about marine conservation before volunteering at Barrang Lompo High School in Makassar’s Sangkarrang Islands Subdistrict.
A total of 120 high school students interacted with international participants through English lessons, educational games and cultural exchanges.
Mario Gusmao Branco, a Timorese student in Unhas’ Faculty of Agriculture, said meeting students at Barrang Lompo High School and peers from other countries was a memorable experience.
“I enjoyed getting to know the students and seeing their enthusiasm. Meeting students from different countries was also wonderful. I learned about their cultures, made new friends and shared memorable moments,” Mario said.
