Russell Wilson has walked into a room many fans never saw coming. The former Super Bowl winning quarterback interviewed Tuesday night for the North Carolina State Wolfpack head coaching job, the same program where his pro dream took shape. The twist is who else sits on the shortlist. Philip Rivers, the Wolfpack legend with a retired jersey, has been the presumed favorite since the vacancy opened. Now a second icon has entered the conversation, and he trades a broadcast desk at CBS Sports for a possible sideline. Here is what the interview means for Raleigh.

How Russell Wilson Entered The North Carolina State Wolfpack Coaching Search

ESPN's Adam Schefter broke the news on X. "Sources: former Super Bowl champion QB Russell Wilson interviewed today for the head coaching job at North Carolina State, where he played three seasons," Schefter wrote. He added, "NC State now has two former NFL greats who starred there, Wilson and Philip Rivers, as prominent head-coaching candidates."

The job is open because the Wolfpack fired Dave Doeren on Oct. 24 after a 3-4 start. Todd Goebbel now leads the team as interim coach.

Wilson knows the program well. He played three seasons in Raleigh, then finished his college career at Wisconsin. He scored 93 total touchdowns for the Wolfpack and ranks fourth in school history with 8,545 passing yards. He later led the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl win in 2013 and retired after the 2025 season with the New York Giants.

Philip Rivers Versus Russell Wilson: What The Wolfpack Must Weigh

Star power is easy to find here. Experience is the harder question. Wilson has never coached. He now works as an NFL analyst for CBS Sports. Rivers coaches high school football in Alabama, which gives him a small edge in whistle time, though he has no college coaching experience either.

The numbers show how close these two legends are. Rivers ranks first in school history with 95 passing touchdowns. Wilson sits one spot behind him with 76.

A college head coach does far more than draw up plays. The job means recruiting teenagers, managing a roster in the transfer portal, building a staff and calming a locker room in the middle of a season. Fame opens doors on those fronts, but it does not replace a plan. Athletic department leaders will likely press both men on exactly that.

NC State could also pass on both names and hire a proven head coach. Fans may love the nostalgia, yet the program needs a steady hand after a rough start. The Wolfpack has a rare choice to make, and the next few weeks should reveal which direction it takes.
